Hi, one of our thoroughbred mares has developed some rain scald on her back and thighs with all of this ridiculous july rain we've been having and so she is now out with a rug and i would just like to know what is the best thing to put on her rain scald?, we've tried baby oil, bathing her, cream, nothing....we havnt really trialled them enough to see if they work, just wanted to know what you all put on rain scald as we need it to clear up fairly fast ... thanks alot xx

I have found the best thing to clear it up is aloe vera gel. Only thing that worked on mine when she developed rainscald last year due to a lowered immune system (she's an old girl). We tried hibiscub, malaseb and a 7 seven day course of antibiotics to no avail. The aloe vera cleared it up in a couple of weeks and it never came back again.

The only cure I have found is clip it off and wash it in Hibiscrub, you will find the hair starts growing back within a week. Speaking from hands on experience this is how I dealt with it, you need to let it breath and get fresh air too it so dont put creams on it.

1 part bleach to 4 parts water... will ruin your jeans, but it does work

You did ask for old remedies

i found using athletes foot powder worked wonders.. may not be old lol but i assure you it clears it up in no time!

Washing with hibi scrub and treating with steriod cream (fuciderm? in orange tube) from the vets will clear it up

I know you asked for 'old remedies', but it's the same bacterial condition as mud fever, and this is what vets are now reccomending as treatment.

Hi Air78 I love the horse in your picture iits looks so much like my mare. Is it a TB if so who is it by? What sort of things do you do with him/her - you are very lucky to have such a good looking horse.

Sorry to go off on a tangent

I put a whole pot of zinc and caster oil on micks back when he had it - didnt rub it in, just let it seal his coat and left well alone. I wanted to turn him out, but I didnt want to rug him. It took about 5 days to clear up but it worked a treat.
