Old Scar - how to treat?

Hi,

My mare has a large scar (aged) on her neck, was recommended to use Aloe Vera on the scar but it seems to be drying it out and the skin is flaky. As far as I can remember its never been flaky and I think it may well be the Aloe Vera. Has anyone used anything else on an old scar? I'm not looking to get rid of it, that would be close to a miracle merely make it less dry and crepey which must be a bit uncomfortable.

I've tried vit E cream with no success.

I'd check the ingredients of your aloe vera, it certainly shouldn't dry out the skin. Some of the less useful versions have unhelpful ingredients added to the aloe vera to bulk it out / preserve it, and these can be drying (ie alcohol, glycerin can dry some prone skins too). Having said all of that though, I've never heard of aloe vera reducing a scar or encouraging hair growth. If it's hair growth you need, Cornucrescine works wonders, but it is rather orange!
