Old school query - how do you clean a lampwick girth?

Well, that's a blast from the past :) We used to scrub them with a brush in a bucket of hot soapy water, keeping the leather parts out of the water. If they were the white showing ones, we used to put the same stuff we used on our plimsoles, (I'm so old) it was called Meltonian and was a tube of whitening stuff with a sponge applicator, but no idea what's available now.

Hobbles off to make a cup of coffee.
