Old tendon injury?

If an old tendon injury flares up again, would the horse be lame completely? Have an ex racer who is not right when the leg with the old tendon injury is on the outside. He trots up sound, is sound on the other rein and this only shows after about 10 to 15 mins work. Have videod him and even though the head nods up and down, there is no sign of lameness in the leg, eg a shorter stride. no real heat or swelling in the leg.
Have only had him 2 weeks and he's not fit at all but have only worked him very gently (he had all the initial work done before but i'm wondering if he came back into work too early?)
Could this be the tendon injury, or is it likely to be something else altogether?

Mm, would be worth getting him rescanned. ( about £1-200) Sounds as tho he is lame if he is head nodding .Also sounds as tho there is heat in the leg.

Did he have the initial fittening work done at the raceyard? Would not trust them with a barge pole- most of them will not bother to do all the proper fittening work and walking. When did the injury occur? How bad was the injury? Has he had the correct amount of time off?

To answer your original question, a horse can have a hole in the tendon and have a hot leg, and still be perfectly sound.

I think they put him on the walker for a few weeks and he had a year off since he came out of training. I believe he was scanned before they started working him again but I think I will give them a call and find out more detail.
He has been pratting around in the field and to me it really looks more like it's coming from the shoulder.
I just wondered if his signs would be 'typical' of an old tendon injury so I don't spend ages looking for other reasons for the lameness when it's the obvious thing.

Agreed - mine had a 2cm tear to her DDFT, coupled with cartilage degeneration, felt like her heel was going to explode with heat (I always joked that I could have boiled a kettle on it!) and was hopping lame for 12 hours followed by being intermittently marginally lame for a year. My vet always says that the worst injuries are often in the sound horses (or the mostly sound) and the ones that are hopping lame are just wusses with a slight pull

I also agree that it would be worth getting a vet to have a look and possibly re-scan.
