Hello,

I’ve recently bought horse with a history of laminitis. She’s 21 and is currently on, happy hoof molasses free, too spec senior and spoonful of farrier formula. Would it be better for her to soak her haynet in warm water and her hard feed in warm water every morning? Also should I switch her to a feed that’s specifically designed for laminitis? Sorry for all the questions. Also thinking of adding a tumeric and flaxseed or a joint supplement.
Thank you!

How is her weight? What grass/forage is she on? Flaxseed is great for adding nutrition but can be fattening. You ideally want to keep her sugar intake low while providing sufficient forage to maintain a good weight. Lami is awful to deal with. Really hope she stays well. Regular (yearly) checks for Cushings are a good idea too at her age. Get into the habit of checking for hoof pulses too. Plenty of threads on this. Good luck.

PistolPete has some great suggestions. I just wanted to add that it's worth getting advice from an independent nutritionist if you are concerned about her feed. Especially if she has just moved yards so forage supplier and grazing will be different. As she enters her senior years with a history of laminitis it might be useful to be well armed with feed recommendations from someone who can balance the diet if grazing needs to be restricted.

Hope you have fun with your mare and she's settling in well ?
