After much searching I’m toying with the idea of keeping my “city car” and buying an older towing vehicle.

I’m seeing Audi Q5s for around the £6k-£10k mark which would prevent me needing to take out a bank loan, but 100k miles and 2011/2012 cars.

Would I just be buying a subscription to my local garage for maintenance? 😂

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good older car at that price point? Must be able to tow one 700kg horse in an Ifor Williams trailer.

I bought a volvo xc90 for £3800 earlier this year. It is getting on for 20 years old, but only had 80k miles and I absolutely love it. Tow limit is 2250kg though so may not be enough depending on your trailer. Suits me as mine are all under 13.2h.

Tiguans and Touaregs are super popular in that price point. Or Landrovers.

If you only need it for towing and have someone mechanically minded, then Defenders.
Touareg is a brilliant tow car, I’ve had 2 and love them. They are thirsty mind…but very nice cars you can’t feel you are towing at all! My husband tells me the Q5 is basically the same engine x

I towed with a high mileage Q5 & ifor double trailer carrying one 16h horse with no problem at all and never had any issues with the car. My husband is a car trader and had great faith in the car. Only swapped as I needed to carry two big horses and it would have struggled.

Whatever you get, use the VehicleSmart app to check MOTs for excessive welding work - it will give you an idea of how much people are having to spend each year to get it through its MOT. You also want a really good service history. Old cars, IME are much more reliable and break less (less techy) than newer cars.

My Dad is an MOT tester and suggests Jap/Korean or German cars are better than most, and never go for a Landrover!

If my Shogun dies, I'll be looking at Volvos - ideally one that's been owned from new by an older person who has looked after it well!

I was looking for a Tiguan, but sadly the only ones available in my budget did not have enough horse brake power for towing as they all seemed to be the Tiguan Match models so I brought an Audi Q5. It was just over budget but is an excellent car.

The touaregs are cheaper than the Q5s and have 3500 towing capacity, basically the same engine but cheaper! You’ll find one for under £10k easily

Second the Ssangyong Rexton. I've had a couple of them and for the money they are excellent towing cars, very underrated, depending on spec/age can tow between 3/3.5 tonnes. I've now got one of their pick up trucks which is equally as good.
