Someone commented that I had a nice youngster when out on a snorting, prancing, spooking hack

Orkan is 18

Oh the joys of bringing horses back into work and trying to keep them in walk.

Tell us about your nutty oldies

My nutty oldie is Ali - in my sig - he is a 25yr old arab going on 5 - he still pony clubs every week and beats the others at games no contest, I still have to give him his first full gallop of the year as my pal who rides him can never stop him! He is nuts and defo not one that acts his age - wouldn't change him and his electric hooves for anything!

I've got one of those - he'll be 20 in June but over the last couple of weeks has been doing a grand impression of a 4year old. I may even consider getting him out on a couple of days hunting before the end of the season! Stopping him might be a whole different story!

My oldie is 28 but acts like a cheeky youngster! At a local show A few years ago I nearly got refused entry for a veteran class as wouldn't believe he was over 18 as he was so full of it!!

We have a 14.2hh Welsh D on loan, he is around 19-20yrs old we think and is a complete pocket rocket!! He has a few grey hairs bless him but a mean buck when he gets really really excited (never malicious) and can do a 4 hour hunt and still jog back to the lorry!! Wicked pony absolutely love him!

My 19 year old shettie thinks she's a baby - she has responsibilities and has a wild gallop around the field every now and then.

I used to have an 19 yo Section C - he was a rather grumpy old man most of the time but once when we were at a fun show, he reared up in the veteran class....needles to say he won - all of the other oldies were plodding round while he was bouncing like a yearling!!!

Our old man will be 27 in April, but dont tell him, he thinks hes 4. He still prances down the trackswhen my youngest takes him out for a hack. He still likes to go for a nice fast canter as well.

Ebony is 26, but would like to think she is still a 4yo. I am hoping to do veteran showing with her this season but I think for the 1st couple of shows at least we will be going sideways round the ring and trying to canter on the spot

I got chucked out of a verterans class once on my horse (he was 24 at the time) because we'd just done a lap of honour in the WH ring and it had blown his brains. He tanked off twice and refused to walk. He was the oldest in there by miles! He's lovely, but very competitive- I have no control, and all I have to do is whisper jump off and he starts bouncing up and down. This is our last season of properly competing (he's now 26, and I'm off to uni in Sept) so we're going all out and hopefully will have a fab time.

I have a spotty pony who is about 23 now, acts like a youngster, loves her huntin but only if she up the front will not wait, has to be hunted in an amercian gag, the senior master loves her thinks she is a brill huntin pony just can't believe how old she is, will stay out all day o ly gets affected by her COPD at times, but we would rather that she happy than just stood in a field, she's currently off with a bruised foot from losin a shoe huntin on thurs, is not v impressed at not bein able to do anything!!! I love her she was my first pony bought for me as my 16th birthday present wen she was also 16, thinkin I could do one last yr in ponies before she was retired, she has taught me soo much and a lot of patience!! Would not change her for the world now, can u tell I love her!!!

K is 26 this year but gets annoyed if you try to tell her this. She loves her 4 hour hacks, bounces/ power marches all the way and does little rears if you try and stop her. She makes me smile, nut job. And she can win anyone in a race!

Maybe Kacey isnt an "oldie, oldie" But she is 17, when i took her to a lesson not long after getting her instructor said "you want to get her out of that habbit before she is older, could give you a lot of problems in the future" haha This was when we were going over 3ft6 jumps and she was running at them, we then realised that if you put them up to about 4ft+ she went up to them with a nice level head and popped them nicely!!
Kacey is not an old horse, she is an "experienced" horse!

My daughters old jumping pony is 22 this year and acts like a 3 year old . She was retired after fracturing a leg but has a new career as a lead rein pony and in veteran classes She is very good with her LR rider, but I once took her in a "fun" prettiest pony class with my 10 year old niece riding (on a LR). Savannah was being a prat spinning , snorting etc and the judge said very kindly, is she only a youngster, she will get used to it. She nearly fell over when I told her how old the pony was

My 21 angloarab is still a bit of a nutter. When I took him hunting for the first time he almost couldn't cope with the excitement, and I had very limited control! He wasn't so bad when we were moving but once the hunt stopped he couldn't stand still and would run backwards into ditches, try to spin round etc. Later on we were cantering down the track towards where the rest of the field were standing at the bottom. I assumed my horse would stop or at least go round them (my rein aids were by now being completely ignored!), but no he cantered straight through the middle of several horses standing very close together, nearly knocking me and several other people off! I decided to take him home after that and vowed never to go again!

Then in the summer there was a hunt ride on nearby and as my younger horse was lame I thought I'd try taking the old guy again as surely he would be a bit calmer. Oh no! He was by far the maddest one there (aged 20 at the time). With double reins on a dutch gag I could just about hold him though he would still try to back into ditches whenever we stopped. Later on he reared up next to another rider, kneeing them in the face! Then as we were waiting to ford a river he decided he didn't want to wait so reared right up, fell over sideways, depositing me on the ground then got up and trotted off down the river, through a tunnel under a railway and out the other side and went a good half mile quite happily before the hunt managed to catch him! Feeling rather sore after being landed on I hacked him home after this, he obligingly jogged the whole way (about 5 miles). I decided that was definately the last time he was going!

He he he....mine is in his early twenties.....last year he got placed down to second in the veteran class because of his behaviour....barging the judge around, prancing with tail in the air....she said he was old enough to know better...oooops

Mines 20. He did a hack yesterday with a younger horse, mine did the whole ride in Passage! he was soaked when we got back. The weekedn before we went out with two lookalike welsh D's aged 12 and 7 and they had to gallop to keep up with mines extended trot!

he ogt so excited at the VHS class at Mottram show that he bucked me of in front of the judge!

We have a 32 year old Shettie at my new yard and Yesterday she broke lose from her owners and came cantering down between the fields so she could get some mouthfulls of grass. Really hilarious her little legs were going like pistons and it was like having a large dog in a Rambo rug coming at you.

Every time they caught up with her off she went again little legs going like crazy.

errm...my mum! she is 47 going on 17! trying to tell her to stop wearing my clothes and hitting the clubs at the weekend, she goes out more than i do! Not as quite when in the form of your mother!
