I complimented how lovely my friend''s mare's hooves looked today at our yard jumping clinic, and she said that she just put olive oil on them, because hoof oil is - to quote - "ridiculously overpriced" :D
Just wondering if anyone else has used other oils instead of hoof oil?? They looked so lovely I might just give it a try.

Well everyones always looking some money saving tips!! I use the black hoof colour stuff, but i usually put it on before i leave home then i put some vaseline over at the show.

For shows I use a light coat of babyoil, just damp a sponge and wipe it on.

I have also used food oil, used to know several people who would use motor oil.

You can use any oil as hoof oil, my farrier suggested putting ordinary veg oil on. If looking for moisture retention put oil on after hosing off legs ( hooves have to be damp not soaking as otherwise oil will just run off of course!).

I use vegetable oil. I did work experience at Mary Kings yard and her horses have their feet oiled inside and out every day. She said hoof oil was far too expensive and so she just used vegetable oil. If it is good enough for her then it is good enough for me!

When I was little I remember people using sump oil, when they did an oil change on the car....can't say I have tried it though!

I used to use veg oil, it looks smart and is very cheap. Win win!

Used engine oil is nasty stuff, full of all sorts of contaminants and thought to be carcinogenic.
