Oliver Townend horrid fall on video @ Rolex Kentucky Equestrian Championship

OUCH! saw the report on BE and nation wide.... and that was a nasty fence to have a fall at! but the video just really sends it all through.. but sounds like he is ok as he is awake and cursing and swearing (apperantly, i have read on nation wide and WFP's webby) so thumbs up but i doubt that they will let him do the SJ tomorrow even if he is able to!

Apparently he's been discharged from hospital and is hoping to be allowed to sj later.
Very very lucky to still be here, that was an utterly awful fall, totally out of the blue, horse was jumping like a superstar until that moment. :( :( :(
Big vibes to OT.

Doesnt suprise me the fence caused 3 virtually identical horse falls- they drop their heads to look down the step and then leave a leg. I'm not sure this sort of fence is really what we want to be seeing anymore, Oli's fall could have had a far worse outcome

I have a question - what happened to the frangible pin? As I thought fences were meant to collapse and prevent these kinds of falls?

I'm a bit surprised that they didn't look at the fence after the first fall like that:confused: All three falls were so similar after all.

Does anyone know how the three horses are?

(I put this in the NL thread too, but thought maybe you guys would know):)

Well the article says that frangible pins will only break under vertical pressure and not horizontal. Which seems mildly absurd to me, since if a horse leaves a leg, it's not high enough to clear the fence and therefore it will be putting horizontal pressure on the fence?

Kerilli - I saw a frangible at Nurstead in the PN. It was on the front of the last upright of a triple bar, so they were using it the same way that Munstead were.

I came up with a novel idea for a frangible pin which would release under vertical or horizontal pressure, provided it was used behind the uprights.

I emailed the idea to Mike E-S early last year but have never had any reply.
