Was I the only one to notice the excessive use of the whip by a certain lady rider going over the final fence yesterday afternoon?

Horse knocked the 2nd to last down, so rider proceeded to smack the horse continuously from take off to landing over the final fence?

Not surprisingly, the horse bucked on landing!

Is this considered a valid training method to get the horse to pick up over the fence in the showjumping world?

I would have thought maybe one sharp smack just before take off if the horse was hesitant, but to keep smacking and smacking until the horse landed seems very excessive to me.

What do you guys think?

Sorry - I can't find any footage - guess it will be on iplayer or such like?

I've just not seen SJ's do this before and wondered what it was meant to achieve?

Taken from British Show Jumping Rules..

Conduct of Members.
Misuse or use excessively a whip or spur (Rules 102.8, 101.9).

For the welfare of the horse
f) Misuse of aids
Abuse of a horse using natural riding aids or artificial aids (e.g. whips, spurs etc.) will not
be tolerated.

The whip should be used NO MORE THAN three times after entering the arena.
The arm should not come above the shoulder and the whip should hit (behind the saddle) the
rump of the horse/pony and not the flanks. The definition of useage of whip is when the rider
takes his/her hand off the reins to use the whip. However, if the Judge feels there is mis-use
of the whip in the arena, in the Collecting Ring or anywhere in the immediate vicinity of the
show ground, at the Judge’s discretion, the competitor may be disqualified. A horse/pony which
is marked as a result of the use of the whip is considered excessive and mis-use.

Is there anything on the Olympia results list about them being eliminated??

Nope - there is nothing about it anywhere which is why I thought I was the only one who thought it was a bit much - also don't understand what it was supposed to achieve?

It was a French lady rider!! To me it seemed an odd reaction to a pole down. But then I was not sitting on the horse nor do I know it's history. I would like to see a replay but it was definetly one of those moments whenyou think was that necessary.

Hmmm, do they enforce this at local BS shows? I've seen horses smacked at EVERY fence at some up here!
