Eventing Team announced for Beijing Olympic Games 2008
The British Olympic Association (BOA) has today selected the Eventing riders to be part of Team GB for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

The Team will be:

• William Fox-Pitt

riding either:-

Mrs Judy Skinner and Mr Michael Payne’s Ballincoola
or Mr Philip Adkin’s Parkmore Ed
or The Hon Finn & Mary Guinness’ Tamarillo.

• Sharon Hunt

riding Mr & Mrs Terry Hunt’s Tankers Town.

• Mary King

riding either:-

Mr & Mrs Eddie Davies and Miss Janette Chinn’s Call Again Cavalier
or Mr & Mrs Eddie Davies and Miss Janette Chinn’s Imperial Cavalier.

• Zara Phillips

riding BGC Partners and Associated Companies including Cantor Index, Mr James Blackshaw's and her own Toytown.

• Lucy Wiegersma

riding Mr Mark Lean’s Shaabrak.

Commenting on their selection the athletes said:

William Fox-Pitt

“It is very exciting news, particularly with three horses in contention. Knowing this early in the year means we can prepare for the Games in the best possible way. The Olympics is the ultimate challenge and is one which I am really looking forward to.”

Mary King

“I am over the moon to be picked to ride at what will be my fifth Olympic Games! Now the hard work starts making sure the horses are in tip-top condition. I have two potential horses, so I will work closely with my trainers to ensure we get the best possible results.”

Sharon Hunt

“This really is a dream come true. I have owned and ridden Tankers Town since he was a four-year-old, so it feels even more special. I am looking forward to the whole experience and I am thrilled to be picked for my first Olympics and to represent my country.”

Lucy Wiegersma

“I am overwhelmed to have been picked. It has been my lifetime ambition to ride in an Olympics. I am particularly thrilled as I have ridden Shaabrak for ten years – he is a real trooper and I shall now be wrapping him up in cotton-wool.”

Zara Phillips

“It is nice to be selected, but we still have a long way to go. I am lucky in that Toytown has been to Championship events before, so he knows about big occasions and has been consistent, but an Olympic Games really is special. I am delighted for Toytown as he really deserves it.”

Simon Clegg, Team GB 2008 Chef de Mission, said:

“I am delighted to welcome these riders into Team GB. Equestrian was able to deliver Team GB a medal of each colour in Athens and the experience in this team and their recent results bode well for success in Beijing. I wish the riders well in their final preparations for the Olympic Games.”

Will Connell, British Equestrian Team Leader:

"Whilst there have been a number of athletes and horses in contention for selection to the Eventing Team, the five riders and horses that the selectors have decided on, represent a mix of experience and youth. The Team includes athletes who have medalled at Olympic, World and European level, so this is an exciting proposition for the Games.

The athletes and team staff, under the direction of Yogi Breisner, will now focus on preparing the horses to peak on 9th August, when the Eventing competition starts in Hong Kong. The support of UK Sport Lottery Funding and the BOA will make this detailed preparation possible. As always, we are extremely grateful for the support of the owners of the horses selected to represent Team GB."

Yogi Breisner, British Equestrian Team Manager

“As the team manager I am fortunate to have five such talented riders on the team, and I am very grateful to all the owners for making such excellent horses available.”

The selectors also named two groups of reserves who are:

1st Reserves (in alphabetical order)

Kristina Cook (Miner's Frolic)
Daisy Dick (Hope Street or Spring Along)
Ruth Edge (Two Thyme)
Oliver Townend (Flint Curtis)

2nd Reserves (in alphabetical order)

Georgie Davies (Fachoudette)
Pippa Funnell (Ensign)
Rodney Powell (Zin Zan II)
Polly Stockton (Tom Quigley)
Oliver Townend (Coup de Cour)
Nicola Wilson (Opposition Buzz)

Great stuff.
Pleased for Lucy! totally deserved. Suprised Tam has been given yet another chance after problems at WEG and Badders.

Yeh but out of 3horses Tam is probably the least likely William will pick.
Really really pleased to see that team - we should do well!

Indeed GI I just hope neither the other two have problems.I think PME will find the conditions better than Ballincoola - dunno might be wrong.

So happy for Sharon and Lucy! Very well deserved..
Oli must be a bit gutted to be only 4th reserve (I’m happy tho

)….probably re-route Flint to Lumuhlen (sp?) now I imagine

Surprised Pippa has been named as a second reserve. Would have thought after Badminton that others would deserve their chance more, like Harry Meade.

Thrilled for Sharon and Lucy W truly deserving after many class performances.

Will be interesting to see what order the first reserves are in? Personally would have Ruth as 1st reserve purely on the fact her dressage is soo good which will be crucial against Germany.

Am really pleased two local riders are in, Mary and Lucy will have huge support in the west Country , both are well known for offering help to locals in things like the Pony Club etc, they have yard visits, do demos etc, and in general give plenty back to their sport.
I am not really keen on some in the reserve list, Pippa for me shouldn't be there, and if OT has one horse included why has he got two?
realy pleased to see Georgie Spence in, her XC round was a joy to watch, and she appears to have a cool head.
I wouldn't like to be in their shoes looking after their horses, the best one we have this morning managed to get his foot stuck in a high tensile steel fence, turned upside down and may have tweaked something, I have just called the back lady for a check over. All I could think of was how much money he's worth and how he isn't insured....

Imagine the trauma if your Badminton horse hurts itself!
I'm looking forward to the Olympics now, I just hope the conditions there aren't too bad.

Im totally thrilled for Sharon Hunt. She has always been such a lovely person to know. Jasper is a quality horse and Im sure they will do us proud!

I had picked this team out myself after Badders... some new faces and some old ones...just what the doctor ordered !!

Excellent team.

I would imagine that Daisy Dick would be devastated not to have been selected though...

That's a really nice line-up. Also really really pleased Ruth Edge is a 1st reserve. I groomed for her one summer (way back) and she really is the most beautiful rider to watch, has a fantastic way with her horses. Was such a shame at Badminton.

Good luck to all, looking forward to watching them all in action now

A great team, all well deserving of their place, so pleased for Lucy and Shaabrak. Fingers crossed they all stay sound and well

I think they've got it spot on with a good mix of experience and first timers who are really proving themselves at the top level right now. Congratulations to Sharon and Lucy in particular. I do feel for Polly and Daisy though, if only Badminton had gone to plan I think it would be them stealing the places of Sharon and Lucy and they must be gutted.

Can't wait !!!!

Well done to Mary King. Agree with you Henryhorn about how much she does to support the sport - Mary gave a demo at Bicton last year in aid of Spinal Research. Spent ages chatting to everyone. Brilliant.

Perfect selection bar I wouldn't have put pippa funnel in at the moment, nor tamarillo on as a 'team' possibility as he has not been performing the best.
Fingers crossed all stay sound and healthy now!

A lot of you talk about Lucy W hopefully keeping Shaabrak sound.... Is he accident/injury prone

Everything crossed for the two of them if that is the case, then

Not 100% on Shaabrak but know Tanker's Town had most of last year off.

Agree with the team 100%.

He seems to have an ability to pull shoes off at inconvenient moments (shortly before dressage test at Fontainbleau), Wednesday last Burghley. Also managed to get a bee sting where his saddle goes at Burghley... So a little accident prone, but doesn't seem to have done anything major recently
