Our barn went up in flames today. Heard the dogs barking, went to see who it was to see flames, horses still in the barn. One pony was out (furthest away stable). Neighbour was down in my boys stable (he was thinking about jumping out the window) and ended up managing to boot him and get him out. Sister got her mare out.
To explain, there is a lorry bay, then a feed room same size then the stables, there was sparks in sisters mares stable. Horses all then went out the bottom door and round the garden and into their field. The smoke was fierce. Then remembered the chickens and dragged them (protesting) out as they live in the stables. Dad drove the car out of the barn (had just had new feed unloaded..)Then just stood back and watched.
Fire engine arrived within about ten mins. The fire must have gone up in approx 10 mins as horses hadn't finished feeds. None of us on site heard/saw it until neighbours phoned. So many ifs, if it had been at night, if the bottom door had still been stuck they wouldn't have had passage out.
Horses all fine, although wound up. All my rugs pretty much are gone, all shavings, hay, feed-gone
Expensive lorry-shell -probably the cause of the fire. 11yr old was out there last, imagine if anyone had been in the lorry?
VEry very scarey and not sure now what will happen, obv. need new lorry (and all the competition gear) and those two bays are goners, and piles of wet hay everywhere. Lots of old stuff that was memories. Horses out in the fields when normally stabled etc. IT could have been a lot lot worse, but it will be devestating enough, was in shock once we got the horses out.
Thank god for good neighbours, we have had multitudes round bringing sarnies for firemen, and just generally being helpful.
Started at around half 7/8pm, firemen left at 1am.

so sorry to hear that

have borrowed rugs from my instructor and feed and they will just have to cope in the field.
luckily none of the tack seems to have been touched, the tack room is halfway down the aisle so doesn't even have smoke damage

thats very lucky about your tack
i take it the insurance will help :S
its horrible when all the hard work goes down the drain
and i'm sure the horses will be fine outside, its getting warmer at least.

insurance will help but they never pay like for like, lorry is covered, just been resprayed, redone etc. Contents covered under home insurance. It will be v. depressing in the light of day I think, have to take lots of pics just to show insurance so will put some up, still shaking though and so very grateful to neighbour who helped get horses out etc. Would be so easy to lose a person though in the smoke.

your neighbors are one in a million, wish i had your neighbours!
like we both said, so very glad no one or any horses were injured
have you had something to drink and a sit down yet?
and its a shame about the lorry, not exactly cheap!

Good Lord, I can only imagine how devistated you must be, especially with the 'what if's'. Thank God the horses and chucks are OK. This has certainly given me a wake up call to be more vigilent in future. Is there anything that you desperately need and cant get, something that HHO could help with? Lots of positive vibes coming your way. Hxx

Oh Katherine, thats awful, I know its not much comfort now but all the material things can be replaced. Just be grateful that nobody was hurt. ((((HUGS))))
If you need anything for th neds desperately let me know, I have enough spare rugs etc to hold a jumble sale (was actually going to sort them out and donate them somewhere this weekend).
Take care and keep your chin up, and the horses won't mind one bit about being out!

OMG how awful! Thank heavens that your horses etc are ok though. Hope the insurance company doesn't take forever to sort out your claim *crosses fingers*
Wish everyone had neighbours like yours

Oh how devestated for you (((((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))
And now you have all the palava with the insurance company and the emotional part going through everything that has been damaged

How frightening for you and thank god for your wonderful neighbours.....

I am sure with the help of HHO anything you need desperately will find its way to you...... I have lots of rugs too... so if you need anymore, just shout.....

on no this is terrible - you must have been so frightened

just happy no one was seriously hurt.

Good luck sorting out everything with the insurance etc.

((Big big hugs))

Bl**dy H*ll!!! Well done moving the horses and the chickens. Lucky no-one got hurt. Best of luck getting your lorry and things replaced. What a shame about the barn.

Thankfully our neighbours etc. are horsey and have lots of rugs etc. to lend until we get our lot sorted, will go and get feed etc. today, about to go and look at the full extent of the damage :S
Thanks so much for all the support.

Get hold of your insurance company. They should be able to offer some practicle help depending on your cover.

We had the same happen to us 9 years ago.

We had a pyout within 10 days for the fodder and we had the barn put back up within 3 months. The insurance paid for the site to be cleared as well.

Good luck

Glad everyone got out ok. Big hugs, I am sure it was a terrible shock. Hope the clearing up isn't to awful for you, and that the insurance claim is simple and swift.
