I'm a bit annoyed tbh, my horse was on loan to a woman who had him for about 18 months, during that time he was due his annual vaccinations which up until that point were spot on and he hadn't missed a single one. About a week before they were due I text the loaner to remind her and text her again a couple of days before and again on the day they were due.
She said they had been done on the day they were due and I had no reason to disbelieve her.
Anyway when I picked him up I saw on his passport that they had actually missed the day by 2 days and therefore had to start the whole course again with the 3 vaccinations. They had the first one done then not bothered to get the second one done 28 - 42 days after, so he had to start all over again.
I told his new loaner that I would pay for them to be done so he was vaccinated again at the end of that week. The bill for that was £50.

Unfortunately she couldn't keep him so I found him another loan home and told his new loaner that he would need the 2nd vaccination which again I said I would pay if she arranged it. This was done just before christmas.
I have just received the bill for this which was £70!!!! Since when did vaccinations become so expensive?

So because the old loaners couldn't be bothered to get him vaccinated on the correct day, it has cost me £130 :( I'm so angry.
There is no point contacting them, they aren't going to give me the money and it will just end up getting nasty and at the end of the day he is my horse.

just wanted to have a moan really....

Am not sure why you had to start the whole course all over again as it was only 2 days over due? my vets advised me that as long as they are done within x number of weeks after the 'due' date then horse is still covered.

They can be done before due date but not after I have always been told by Vets

My vet told me the same as I missed my WB's annual vacc by one day - as he's retired its not a problem as he's "covered" so to speak but I believe if you compete regularly or want to sell in the future for example you will need to start again as his passport will be incorrect.

Spot on, if you turn up to a national show where passports have to be produced you will not be able to compete if the dates don't match up. Expensive mistake.

Oh dear, that is a bit of a pain and an unecessary expense for you but at least you know they are done correctly now.

I took on a loan horse last year who's owner had let the injections lapse - she did pay for the first one but then I paid for the other two which left me more out of pocket than her! I have since bought the horse though so all's fine

He's on loan with view to buy now, the girl that has him is lovely so I'm hoping she will buy him at the end of the loan period :)

I used to do a lot of RC teams and they are really strict about vaccinations, and his new loaner is going to do a lot of competing too.

My vet told me there was easily a month's existing cover if you missed the due date. But I suppose if you are competing, rules is rules.

According to Jockey Club rules (which all affiliated bodies use) the gap between the 1st and 2nd vaccinations is 21 - 92 days, not 28 - 42.

Either the 42 was a typo or your horse would still have been fine to have his 2nd vacc.

ETA £70 sounds perfectly reasonable as will include a call out charge.

His annual vaccination was due on the 10th feb 2011, it was done on the 12th and they had started the whole course again, so the next one should have been done 21 - 92 days later (sorry about the 28-42 mistake, I obviously copied it down wrong!) however when I picked him up at the end of october 2011 it was obviously too late for the 2nd one and he had to start all over again from the beginning!

The £50 bill was because the college where he was kept had a deal with the vets that they only had to pay £10 call out.
Also because he was kept at a college his vaccinations had to be up to date, they were not amused that he had missed them and it looked bad on me and the student that had him on loan.
