Well, I decided to go for a nice leisurely hack last night about seven, hubby was home from work to put the kiddies to bed.
So i set off as usual, making her do lots of transitions.
Decided to make her trot up a hill (on a bridleway not on the road), she had a nice long rein to stretch down, she has always been a bit of a spooky bum anyway, all of a sudden she stopped dead without any warning, I was totally unprepered for this and went over her head and to the left, am lying on the floor looked up at her and she is trotting towards me, so I rolled up into a ball waiting for a crunch as she treads on me somewhere (how scarey), but there was no crunch thank goodness and she just put her head down and started eating. I phoned hubby, I was only ten mins from home, and he comes to see me, I was very shaken up in fact I couldn't stop shaking for about an hour, but I did get straight back on. This morning nothing seems to be hurting or aching, so I suppose I was very lucky.
The Moral of this story, If you have to hack alone, which I do, then always tell someone where you are going and how long you are going to be, and always take your phone.

Ouch! Glad it wasn't too serious, and I hope you're not too sore from your fall. I came off last night as well! I was jumped out of the saddle, and am already stiffening up. I don't bounce like I used to.
You're very lucky having a kind hubby to rescue you.

I admit that is a frightening experience and I am glad that you were not seriously hurt.
Yes that is a very good point about telling people and having a phone on you as well.
I always tell the yo when I am going out and roughly where and how long I will be and carry my phone in a bum bag.
Unfortunately Dougal is a bit like your spooky mare ( in that he spooks) he is ok if in company but sadly there are only a few that ride on the yard and they are not often all there at the same time and due to our busy lives and the fact I am working now I am often not there when the other riders are.
Doug will become quite sharp out alone and you can feel him started to tense up, he snorts and he gets very edgy and will plant himself.
It does make hacking out alone quite uncomfortable at times though because when he does play up you have to keep asking him to go forward past objects or even around corners etc.
Anyway so glad to hear you are not hurt and I hope your next ride is more enjoyable

Glad you are ok, and that your horse is a girl and didnt run home and leave you, mine would have done!

Its for reasons like this that i dont like to ride out alone, and if i have to i just do a 20 minute ride around the block, very boring but safer for me!

sounds very scary, glad you're not hurt though.

My pony took off with me last night, I think I'm going to completely give up on ever hacking alone, it's just too scary.

i agree bex, hacking alone is scary! id rather ride around a course of xc country jumps (and i haven't done that for 2 years!) than go hacking.

Frankie's the same; the other night i actually had butterflies as i went down the lane out of the yard, he was ok actually but normally he jogs when hes excited and when he spooks he is so irrational! he doesn't stop and look, he just runs off! i can manage to stop him after a few strides, so he doesn't bolt or anything, but all i can think is 'what if a car was there?!'

horses hey, who'd have 'em

no i thought i was being silly because i thought that day when i went out for a hack, i have ridden stupid horses before and stayed on! i dont know what it is about Frankie that makes me feel scared! i think it may be the main road, there are cars everywhere, with chavs driving them that have no idea about the country and have no idea bout how to react to horses on the roads and the hacking is rubbish!

i used to not say anything to anyone about my hacking phobia but now i think if i keep quiet it will never get better! xxx

I hate it when they just stop like that!!! I was taking a horse up some galllops once, at full speed out of the saddle and a pheasant flew out, he went from full gallop to halt!!!! Needless to say I landed about 10 foot in front of him and then he just stood there and let me get back on like nothing had happened, I could tell he was sniggering!!!!

Agree with always take a phone! My horse bolted with me through a barbed wire fence and bronc'd until I jumped off. Being a mile and a half from home I didnt fancy leading a bleeding (he'd shredded his legs & chest on the fence) freaked out horse home! Phones are great things
