OMG - I think we may have become 'mare converts'!

Having had the Baggage for several months now, I can honestly say that she is one of the most intelligent, personable & loyal equines I have ever encountered! She also has that certain 'je ne sais quoi', which I can only presume is due to her being a 'girly'!
Despite a few days of her turning into the 'bitch from hell' whilst in season (how to gain a truly secure seat in 3 days flat! lol), she is more tuned in to MD than CB ever was & despite her unpredictability is almost entirely predictable! (If that makes sense?)
Can any other mare owners better define this special quality, as I can't quite put my finger on it but it's definitely there!
 
I find that mares tend to be a one person horse and when you get that special one that you click with there is nothing like it. I have this relationship with my mare and she is an orange one, she is as tuned into me as I am to her.
 
My mares are lovely. So are my boys but Im def a mare convert! Maybe Ive just been lucky!

Can't put it any better, but I have been converted too. A good mare will lay down and die for you (which more than makes up for the seasonal 'I'm going to do my best kill you' moments!!!)

You know the Baggage personally then? Wow, I'm impressed! lol
 
I have an amazing bond with my mare. She may be a cheeky little monster at times but she is so loving. Mares, like us women, may be temperamental at times but they have so much to give.
 
I have a bond with one of the boys but not the other. But all my mares bond. Its different to the boys. Hard to describe really.

But they dont seem to be as dependent on the herd as the boys.

Maybe thay are more intelligent being female and realise which side their bread is buttered!!!
 
Well, the Baggage is not remotely 'helpful' & gives absolutely nothing away for free, you have to work for everything but at the same time, get it right & she would work 'til she dropped & try her heart out for you - maybe that's the 'special quality'?
The geldings hope for respect, the Baggage demands it whilst obedient, is completely lacking in the subservience the boys exhibit! She also lacks their good-natured sense of humour & is as keen to laugh at you as with you but in a sticky situation (scary tractor moment for example!), held her nerve & held her ground in a way the boys would never have done, which despite her being a right c*w on occasions, gives MD a sense of security & trust that was hitherto unknown to her!

I made an almost identical comment about the Baggage Joya - I guess I've just discovered that 'secret quality' that mares have after all then! lol
 
I,ve had horses now for over 40yrs, and in that time had more than a few shall we say

when you get a bond with a mare its worth more than gold itself, they are so much more braver than a gelding, and will give you that extra mile when its needed, its been said it is becase they are entire, but with out the testostrione (sp), i think its because at the end of the day they are female and are superior lol

I have found it takes much longer to gain their trust and for them to consider you 'worthy'! But once you have it they would lay down their life for you. Spring has a very big personality and has an opinion on everything - a bit like most women. She is very intelligent, loving and brave but cannot be bullied. I have become a good negotiator and if she believes that it is her idea/in her best interests then there is no question that she will do whatever I ask of her to her greatest ability. If she thinks it is pointless/boring/not a good idea I have quite a job persuading her! Lol! Mares are great fun!!

I am beginning to see where you are coming from. Ru is my first ever mare and is proving to be far better than I ever anticipated. I have always been a gelding person and have always prefered bays..... but i wouldn't part with my chestmut mare for all the tea in china
