Well, i went to Bricky today to do a hunter trial and took one of my boys in a cheltenham gag. I have never found the answer to brakes with him, having tried nearly everything! He flew round the intro which is bigger than he has ever done before and i had total control all the way round! Amazing.
I had two reins on it incase he threw a wobbly but he was fine. It was so nice not to have to pull on his mouth all the way round cos i knew when i did he would come back to me!
Sorry for the pointless post but had to share it as i never thought i would crack it!

Well done !! we have "borrowed" one from a bit bank to try next week on my daughters naughty pony who thinks XC is an excuse to tank off all the time!! diddnt tell us to use two reins tho, might be a bit of a handfull for her small hands prehaps?

Yes it is quite a handful. I only put two on cos i know my boy can be very sensitive and if he didnt like it i would have nothing else to pull on. Next time i think i will try it with one rein. Good luck with yours next week!

Although many people ride with a Chelt gag with only one rein (on the rope) it was designed to be ridden with 2, and its action can be honed far more if you use a rein on the snaffle ring too - it makes it a much *nicer* bit and you have far better steering too!

Personally I wouldn't, so just go with the rein on the gag and see how you get on (and ensure your daughter has enough steering!) As I said, many people use this bit with just the one rein
