Have been nagging my OH all summer about coming out with me and my horse. He can either ride his bike or walk the dogs and we will just stroll along together. He has always said no, as he is sure the horse will do something crazy. Let me just stress, horse has never done anything crazy (touch wood!!). Anyway he has agreed he will walk the dogs while I ride, am now really nervous something willl happen and he will say told you so!!!! Don't even know why I have kept on at him, as quite happy going on my own!!!!!

That will be nice - it will be good for you to share your hobbies.

Sometimes me and OH ride bikes out with our daughters who ride the horses and it's really nice (esp considering one daughter doesn't actually ride and takes my horse while I have to go on the bike)!

TBH I'm pretty sure he will back out!! I would like to do it and everthing go well. Also promised him I would go to the shooting range in return!!!!

Ha, be careful what you wish for. I started the same way. Before I knew it he wanted to ride himself, then there were the lessons and THEN he started giving me tips on my riding..... God knows I have a lot to learn but from the OH???? Had a sense of humour failure. He is now ex OH (nothing to do with horses mind you, he was just sooo not the right one, think very ugly version of Nicholas Cage)

Sometimes they can really suprise you! When I had the two horses he referred to them as mules and had nothing to do with them. Now the TB has been swapped for a 2yo coblet "we" have horses and they are on the guided tour if anyone comes round and I even get accompanied for field checks and feeding . Dont know why they change their mind but it can only be a good thing.......I think

My OH calls him a donkey!! Which he certainly is not! Could not imagine if he actually started riding. Problem is, if he did start riding and then fell off I would feel it was all my fault. JWill just wait and see if he even comes for the walk tomorrow.

I hope you have a really good time together out on your ride/walk. 2 weekends ago I managed to persuade my bf to come out for a ride on his bike while I rode my pony and he really enjoyed himself as did I. He's going to come out for another bike ride this weekend as the weather is nice :) After 9 years together and him hating horses I was surprised by his reaction to it and thought he would back out. Even had a little race on the farm which my little ponio clearly won! :)

Flash_28 that sounds like great fun!! I am hoping it doesn't rain tonight or tomorrow morning so we can go straight away, before he finds too many excuses!! And he hates horses too, so maybe he will change his mind and will progress to taking the bike so we can go a bit faster!!

We all had a really good time, little B Ponio included :) He's not the world's fastest walker with his little legs so we did have an issue on the roads a bit as his walk wasn't fast enough for the bike. So was nice when we could get on some grass as then the speeds matched up without me having to trot him. Plus was great to show the bf the turn of speed on him as he was adamant he would win in a race!

If you do go on the roads though put your horse in front as other road users have even less consideration for cyclists. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say they couldn't see me on a 13.2 behind the bike. As soon as I went in front there was a clear change in the speed they went past.

Hope you all have fun! x

LOL I brought my OH a little cob and its 'his Joe' now. Course he rarely rides him but puffs out his chest when people come round. I think its good (especially when back late and he gets to check over 'his boys' - the mares wait for me!)

Ah now we found it better to have the bikes in front of the horses, because when the bikes were behind, the horse kept listening to the bikes and trying to peer round to see them, and when my OH put his brakes on one of the horses spooked a little bit - but they were absolutely fine when the bikes were in front of them or beside them where they could see them.

Ahhh yes I didn't think of that. My little guy is a massive wuss when it comes to anything so I think I just don't notice it anymore with him! I suppose if you were on a bigger horse than him then the cars would be able to see you when you are behind the bike and more likely to slow down for you.

Although the hack out with the bike did him some good as he isn't scared of bikes now! :D When he was on the farm if my bf rode off infront he would try and follow him to keep up! He's such a sweetie!

I had a pact with my OH when we met 11 years ago. I would learn to ski, if he learned to ride. He went for about 10 riding lessons and I went skiing for about 6 years....I hated skiing and still do, however earlier this year, he started riding my old gelding and before I know it, he was cantering round the park where I used to keep them. I now have two horses - one on the recovery from an illness which he seems besotted by. It's definitely easier to have them on side when you've got horses cos at least they understand why you have to get up at 5.30am or whatever to do them before work. I have to admit, mine doesn't like getting his hands dirty yet though! Good luck and before you know it, he'll be wanting to have a "sit on"....
