OK . . . I'm bouncing right now. Rode Kal in the school today (hacking buddy still out of action) . . . did some work over poles. Not only did he give me some lovely work in walk and trot (even got bend) but . . . drum roll please . . . he gave me walk to canter! First. Time. Ever! AND it was on the left rein.
To put this in perspective:
a) I'm a numpty novice and although I had mastered walk to canter on my lovely schoolmaster RS horse, it was something Kal and I had never been able to achieve
b) Canter is Kal's weakest pace . . . when we bought him he was very unbalanced and often went disunited on the left rein . . . he certainly wasn't off his forehand enough, nor balanced enough to do walk to canter with a talented rider on board, much less a numpty
c) He's only been back in work for about five weeks
Granted, I didn't ask for it . . . we had just walked over the poles, I asked for left bend and I must have put my right leg slightly back and he offered it up . . . lovely smooth, balanced transition. AND, he didn't panic and run off . . . AND I didn't panic and grab at him . . . I just sat up and asked for a downwards transition and he came calmly back to trot. And then I smiled a really big smile.
Huzzah!
OK. Brag over.
