OMG - some abcess!

After my horse was kicked in the field last week she developed an abcess the size of a basket-ball on her chest. Well, it popped yesterday and the amount of pus that poured out was unbelievable. It came out of a small hole but today she has a 6 inch split in her chest and you can see right in to all the dead tissue and muscle. Yuk.
Just rang the vet and he has said to hose it out to get rid of all the dead stuff. It can't be stitched as all the skin is dead around it. It's going to look horrendous for quite some while, especially when the skin starts to drop off.
Just biding my time on here while I wait for my OH to come home in a minute to help with the hosing. TBH the smell made me nauseous and I don't think I'd cope with it on my own.

Oh God, that sounds awful, I do hope it will heal up quickly and not leave much of a scar.

O.K you asked for it, I will take pics tomorrow. She was a star when we hosed it out, just stood there. The vet did say that she wouldn't feel it as all the nerves there are dead.

You might find it more bearable to deal with if you dab some Vicks under your nose. I use it when I have to visit abattoirs (the joys of working for DEFRA)
