OMG temp for tomorrow night...

Wow I've just done a 5day forecast for here and it says -6 tomorrow night OMG that means really rugging my old lady up as she feels the cold at the best of times, I've added loads of bedding too already so she has HUGE banks and big deep bed on matting...just so I know she's going to be warm enough as the barn she's in gets v v cold.

At the mo she's not clipped, and has a waffle cooler, fleece and neck h/w stable rug on and is just about OK...but I'm going to have to get her big under-rug out and put on her along with l/w stable rug and neck rug...boy oh boy!!!

How do you all cope with this cold weather and I cant even find my other half to my gloves so my hands are coldies...
 
It hasn't felt too cold to me yet, and believe me where I live is VERY exposed. Likewise the ponies don't care. The mare is fully clipped and in a m/w rug and the youngster is yet to have a rug on this winter - they do come in at night though
 
-6 Kezz??? You're only a few miles up the road from me, and the lowest I've seen forecast is -1. Oh, I do hope the -1 is right - my old girl struggles with the cold as it is

Which forecast is that? I'm in Bucks and just looked at BBC and that says -2. Coldest it shows is Friday at -4. Which is cold enough for me to be fair!!
Our unclipped 3 year old comes in at night and is wearing one 300g combo (he hasn't got much coat) in the day and a fleece with a mw stable rug at night. My arab was clipped in october but its grown back a bit and he is in same daytime rug but heavy stable rug. Mare lives out in one 400g combo rug. They are always all toasty warm under rugs but if dropping below freezing I will put one more layer on my arab. Stables are fairly warm but grazing on exposed hillside!
 
We have heavy snow forcast for tomorrow night and wednesday in East Yorkshire (Goole) area! I can't wait!! Hehe! Nothing beats waking up in a morning and seeing that it has snowed overnight!
 
I know!!! I think I may ned to go rug shopping!
Says it's going to feel like -9 on friday night!!

Mind you, I would rather have the cold than the rain anyday!

Layers. Tucked in. Hat, cover your ears, neck warmer on and pulled up over your mouth and nose if need be.

Go and buy some gloves. I only wear buckskin gloves if my hands are going to get wet, otherwise I just wear one or two pairs of those cheapo wool gloves, and replace them with a dry pair when they get wet, I get through about 6 pairs a day.

Oh, and no licking metal gateposts (it has been done!) or touching metal anything with wet hands.

If you don't have heated troughs/buckets then, if you can, part fill with hot water.

I'm thoroughly hacked off because everywhere else seems to have snow and I don't, we are melting at 5C here (-22 during the day a few days ago, crazy weather) Plus side of no snow, and the only one I can find, is that I still have grazing for the horses and their hay intake is about 40% of the normal for this time of year.

In winter here it is mostly minus, my horse is fully clipped and wears 375g Rhino Plus, I have an underblanket for it 200g but he rarely uses it.

He has barn shelter if needed on rainy days with free access to a winter paddock. Better days he goes onto back field which is a couple of acres.

At night he is in an insulated American barn with a Rambo stable rug on without neck, he has a combo if very cold.

I cope with a all in one thermal suit and rushing around so not to get cold and a must is my earwarmer band.

We just get use to it here ;-)

Toss up isn't it? Fashionable and freezing your butt off or Mr/Mrs Michelin and toasty. You can be fashionable, easiest in bigger barns where the arena and stalls are under one roof, no need to go out at all then.

This was on BBC website today for Bracknell and that is only round the corner from me for the -6...with sleet due weds too....
-1 tonight though..not too bad really.

I layer myself up something silly i feel the cold too....just hands get cold mucking out and doing everything.
 
Neither of mine are clipped and so the unrugged 3 year old will cope perfectly well if the temp drops a few degrees below freezing. Sienna has her lightweight on and will also be fine. If they get cold they can canter round the field to warm themselves up!
