Took the boys to the Cotswolds on Friday to stop for a long weekend with a friend. Just got on to the M40 and we heard a very load hiss of air, no probs with lorry so just kept to a steady 40mph. Got to Stretton on Fosse and found that we had a flat tyre

thank god it was one of the back ones as they have 2 tyres on each side. Settled boys in and went to get a replacement fixed.
Did some schooling friday night and I must admit I was extremely naughty and popped Pidge over a 6" cross pole twice

Went for a nice hack on Saturday morning and managed to avoid the rain, even had a canter and had brakes in the snaffle

Made Sunny's day by letting him overtake Pidge at canter

Schooled again Sunday night in between the rain and then came home this morning.
Ate very well, too well so am on a diet for the rest of the week. spent loads at Derby House on Sunday.
BUT the best thing was I rode Pidge in his snaffle all week and the canter is definately improving and there was no snatching at all. So I am a very happy mummy

very scary, thank god it wasn't a front tyre I dread to think whatwould happened

drove at 45mph all the way home today. Still worried thinking what if a front tyre goes, but tried to think of the fact that I've been driving cars for 15 years and never had a trye blow. All I know is that someone was looking after us on Friday

CS - Well since he's had his treatment for his hock spavin he has been feeling too well, so I upped his kk snaffle to a pelham with 2 reins and then a double bridle. He works well in the double at walk and trot and canter, but has then started backing off it in the canter and the last time I rode him he started to back off it in the trot too, hence he would just lean forward with no warning and snatch - bloody awful to sit to

so popped him back in his snaffle Wednesday night and he was kind of better, but over the weekend he has been really good, got my brakes back and not a hint of snatching

Several people have said that if the horse is backing off the bit then this can make them snatch (I've never experienced this behaviour before) so tto drop the bits back down. What do you ride yours in?

I had a front right tyre blow out on the motorway overtaking a petrol tanker at 70 mph.. The noise was like an explosion and the force required to keep the box from hitting the tanker pulled all my shoulder muscles.
I was empty of horses or I couldn't have controlled it, and boy did it teach me a lesson..
You never see me going more than 55 with horses and 60 without, and I check my tyres regularly.
The rescue chap told me he does at least one horsebox per week every week of the year, apparently because they stand parked so often the sun rots the tyres..
I thought my end had come and it was without doubt the most terrifying moment of my life.
Be warned, unless your tyres are under a year old and you park under cover you may be at risk from the others too..

thanks for that HH, the box has been under cover since April last year when I bought it but it was out prior to that. The guy did check the other tyres for me when he replaced the blown one and said they were ok. What should I be looking for? and how do I check the back ones on the inside as there are 2 tyres together?

I had a front tyre blow out on the M5 going about 55 didn't know what had happened at first as the bang was so loud but when the lorry started rocking (as lost about 20-30cm of height from trye!) and I then saw what was left of the rubber of the tyre in the side mirror did I know it was my tyre. As soon as heard the bang though I took foot off accelerator then soon followed with hazard lights.

Worst thing you can do with a front trye blow out is brake so just got it straight and then slowly edged it into hard shoulder whilst waiting for it slowly to come to a halt.

Worst thing was I did have a horse on board and a big one at that as was Dan! Due to issues with the spare (on motorway side) and it being a Sunday we had to wait nearly 4 hours to be rescued (would have been marginally less but they wanted to tow us home 2.5 hours even though we were 30mins from our destination of W&W and I was NOT having that

) Thankfully Dan was a star even when another lorry took off my wing mirror (which stood out all of 10cm from the body of the lorry!

My mechanic agrees re use of lorry and tyres getting ruined by sun. He checks them every time he sees lorry.

Also was in TE's lorry when she had a blow out infront, all of 100m from a free recovery bit of the motorway, we knew it was only that far as nearly crashed into the sign saying so LOL
