OMG - Unbelievable ad!

A friend of mine in Leics thought about having one. Never seen them on the classifieds before but they are about!

I remember seeing that man in the paper riding a small zebra is poorly fitting tack. Was sad to see. They are meant to be hard to train, wild animals for a reason.

Yes it is. You need a DWA (Dangerous Wild Animal) Licence.

Dont agree with it though.

It just really shocked me to see an ad for one on DD of all places! They are wild animals for goodness sake!

I wonder if you need a special set up for them, or if you can just plonk em in a field with a shetty? :p

TBH, as long as they are looked after and kept with someone with a licence I can't really see the issue. They are not endangered, and the parents of these were certainly bred in captivity. If people want to buy one why not, they cannot be anymore exotic than llamas or alpacas surely? Just domesticated for less time. We have wild horses and domesticated ones, why not the same for zebras.

Lets hope my mum doesn't see it, she's ummed and ahhed over getting alpacas or reindeer in recent years, this she might actually go for

What could you do with one? Can it pull a cart if it cant be ridden? Would be a good talking point in the paddock next to the others though :p

My old riding school has one along with various other animals. They don't use it for riding though. Cost a fortune!

The license is the reason I wouldnt touch one. There is no standard cost and no basis behind it - even if you bedget now it can shoot up a following year.
I helped build a red panda enclosure to comply with the licensing and the whole thing is a bit of a joke imo.

Seems very sad to me, and somehow not right. Surely we have enough domestic animals to choose from without wanting wild animals as pets?

I suppose it's to do with peoples' egos. They want an animal that turns head and makes them feel big, without much thought of what's best for the animal. :(

Saddest of all is the comment above wondering what became of Zig. :(:(

I don't really understand some people's need to have the most exotic pet. I have lizards and would never buy an animal I thought was wild caught rather than captive bred. Tis true that all animals were wild once upon a time, but agree we have enough really.

I go on reptileforums for occasional lizard questions and there is an exotics section on there, people keep all kinds of things like arctic foxes in their houses like dogs (smelly scent glands), skunks (even more smelly!), meerkats (presumably to do car insurance deals), porcupines, all kinds!

It probably stems from 'oh that is so cute I WANT one!' And what mankind wants, he shall have it seems!

I'm not going to lie, I think a pet sealion would be excellent, and some penguins.
