I just saw the noon news here. it did a long feature on how Europe, I include the UK in that. Correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, you all on fire. they mentioned that fewer 5% of homes in the UK have air conditioning. Some American on holiday said her hotel didn't have a/c.

1. You have my sympathy.
2. Tips from the South East USA.
Open the windows at night.
Close the windows in the morning.
Keep the curtains or shades down during the day to stop the sun from shining into the house and heating it up.
Take lukewarm showers.
Put bowls of ice in front of fans to help spread cool the air.
Wear loose, lightweight, light colored clothing.
Anything you need to do outside do in the early morning and late evening.
Water, water, water.
If it is cooler in the shade than your house, use that.

I hope this may help since I know y'all aren't used to this cr@p.

We're all whingeing over here https://forums.horseandhound.co.uk/threads/and-so-it-begins….820403/page-7#post-14961295 . We have to have blinds down most of the summer due the idiot design of our house, so now we have tarps and sheets on the outside!

My vet was due at 4pm today but I got a call to say he had been diverted to an emergency and a different vet was on the way to me. The vet that arrived told me they had been called out to two different stable yard fires today. It doesn't bear thinking about and I felt very guilty for moaning to my husband that I'd been waiting in the heat for an hour.

It’s not pleasant, even sitting still had me still sweating. I’m keeping the dogs indoors, although they loved their paddling pool earlier. We were very fortunate to be allowed to finish school at midday today and yesterday. Back to normal tomorrow then we break up for summer on Thursday.

Horses & families evacuated near us due to huge fire. Fire Service declared a major incident this afternoon. Wind changed direction later, so families allowed back.
The local community pulled together, never seen so many offers of transport & temp grazing.

I saw what I think was the beginnings of a fire on the way up the A1 today...I think somewhere near the Harrogate junction but on the other side of the A1.
I don't know what the highest others saw was but I got 39.5 at ferrybridge and hubby got 40 at Coventry. He had to load cars that had been sat in all that heat and I had a full load to strap down. On the plus side after that I got a lovely shower and jumped into the truck with the air con on.
Aberdeen tomorrow, so at least it will be a little bit cooler.

Used to these temps. Grew up in them and grew up in the country without air con to boot....though I had a basement where we could hide out in ?

I remember setting up a fan outside the back garden doors in the evening to blow cooler air into the house. Works great and the same theory as a fan blowing ice water.

What is worrying is how dead everything is from a general lack of rain combined with the super hot weather which is just calling for fire everywhere...(and that includes any hay that is stored in lofts).

Ice in front of the fans is a great idea. Never tried it until this evening.

I'm so glad it has worked for you.

Back in the day people had sleeping porches that had screens on the sides that didn't join the house. It gave them a nice cross breeze and if the people were lucky they also had ceiling fans.

That is so scary. Can things be hosed down for fire prevention? I know the hay in the lofts is going to be a HUGE problem. I would be inclined to keep my horse out 24/7just to be safe.

Can I just add close your curtains when you open your windows at night - especially if you have lights on otherwise you'll get daddy long legs and moths (I learned this the hard way).

Absolutely, yes. If you think a fire is going to pass through, hose everything you can well beforehand.

We need a good few days of heavy rain, a few hours probably won't make much difference, it will just bounce of the ground, it needs to soak in. We have a chance of rain with temps around 23c today. I'm doing a rain dance as we speak.

It was so hot yesterday in Birmingham that train power lines to New Street Station were destroyed.

Supposed to absolutely downpour on Friday it looks like...but then again it was also forecasted to pour a lot today and it seems the sun is rising....

And yes hay catching fire in lofts is a real concern indeed. Seen it happen back home a few times. Thankfully nothing major.

Last night was awful. I woke up completely drenched in sweat. It was 34c in my bedroom and that’s with windows shut and curtains closed during the day.
Opening the windows once it had cooled outside barely did anything, the house is too well insulated and wants to keep in heat

Woke up at 5am to the room selling strongly of smoke.

Checked the house and surrounding fields. The entire valley below us is shrouded in smoke.

Unfortunately looks like a fire on the moors above a local reservoir caused by a disposable barbecue.

We need some rain here. I can’t get any electric fence posts in the ground. Snapped one even trying to.
Much cooler here today, I kind of miss the heatwave though!
If you’d seen the state of me after my last dog yesterday, however. I had fans on the dogs and back door open for a through-draft, but my god did I feel sick afterwards. Peeled off my clothes and had a cold shower.

Several local supermarkets have had to clear their chilled food shelves because they weren't able to maintain the temperatures. Mainly Aldi but others affected too, I was planning on going shopping today now it is a little cooler but that seems to be scuppered now. We were forecast rain for yesterday evening but it never materialised, and it is desperately needed. There have been several fires in open land round here the last couple of days, poor firefighters must be exhausted.

You're from Canada aren't you? My son is in BC, I was over there a couple of weeks ago and it was the first hot spell of the year, temperatures high 20s into 30s, I don't know if it's because they are higher up but it wasn't the same stifling heat as here. They hadn't put the high risk fire measures in place yet, but they don't mess about , absolutely no fires allowed in the open during the hot weather.

Scats you need a battery powered drill and make holes for the fencing standards to go in.

Humans can be so stupid. They should take a lesson from the idiots in California that have started huge forest fires with firecrackers and exploding baby reveal party stuff.

You really need to be careful. It is so easy to overheat in this weather. Hydrate and try and stay out of the heat. I wish I could send you all one of my window units.

Is it less humid in BC?

We have the same fire measures during dry and windy weather. People are actually pretty good about following them. it may be because the deer hunters don't want to be caught in a forest fire.

Yep literally no houses have air con & a lot of workplaces don't either (luckily where I work did a refit a few years ago & put it in... Not in the staff room though which I swear was 30 odd degrees yesterday!) Outside was definitely cooler than inside last night / this morning

Indeed though I'm from Southern Ontario. We have hot, sticky (humid!!!) summers as we get the warm air come up from Mexico and the southern States combined with the impact of the Great Lakes. BC has weather that is usually more typical to the UK (except more rain believe it or not!).

We used to also drive down to South Carolina for a few weeks in the summer and I always remember that being hot hot hot ?
