Was wondering on my walk this morning what other people do when you meet a walker (without a dog) or a bike for example?

Do you put your dog on a lead?
call it back to sit next to you?
Call him to heel off lead?

Just wondered as not all people like dogs and mine is a social dog who will always go up and say hello (politely!) but not everyone likes it, so I tend to do a mixture of the above.... Or a bike? I always call him back so he doesn't get in the way.

What do you do?

If I am anywhere where I know there will be other dogs, bikes, people etc, they stay on a lead and are allowed to walk out in front on a 2m loose line (no pulling!!!)
When we see anyone or anything coming then they are asked to come to heel (or are reeled in :p) and walk by my left hand side while we pass.

If the dog is friendly/submissive then we can have sniffs and hellos, if the dog is being arsey (usually small mouthy terriers :p) then we keep walking briskly.

People don't tend to like GSDs bouncing up to them/their dogs, even in a friendly manner.

nothing :o
they know not to go away from heal if they are walking to heal so i just walk on past... if they are away from me then they can go up if they want - but i hardly ever meet peeps ans usually its just the local keeper whom i go beating with so he knows the dogs and says hello

She's generally walked on a 50ft line so I have to call her to heel to avoid tripping people up more than anything else. :p Depending on the width of the path and her interest in the person I will either sit her at my feet or shorten the lead up and pass by with her at heel. I am hoping that over time this will become an automatic behaviour and that she'll come to heel whenever she spots a person on the path.

If we meet an off-lead dog sniffs are exchanged and with the co-operation of the owner she can often stop and have a play, especially in the park, but I reel her in sharpish from on-lead dogs.

Since starting bikejoring training she's shown an avid interest in bikes so again, called in (or reeled in if gone temporarily deaf). :o

Mine are off lead for most walks, if I see someone ahead, I call them to heel, and OH will call half, so we end up having a split of them at our legs, forming a little pack, they will not approach another dog unless given the go ahead, so if the other dog is on lead I will keep them at heel, if the other dog is off, I say "go on then" and they will approach sniff and walk off from the other dog, some will just ignore all together and stay at heel or walk off ahead.

Person minus dog-
If its on the road/in a field just call her to me and walk on by unless I stop for a chat. If its down a narrow lane/path or there are young kids then I put her on a lead.

Person with dog- Put her on a lead. She doesn't like strange dogs coming up to her and if they do at least I can control my dog.

Bikes- Never met any! Would put her own her lead though as she has a tendancy to get in peoples wau. :o

Will make mine sit and wait for bikes/trial bikes (we walk on a RUPP so meet a lot) but i generally don't call them back for other dogs unless i see the other owner do so.

Mine won't stop to say hi - far to busy crashing through hedges  :D

Ps, with bikes I make them all sit in the side and let biker pass, an with a human I keep them at heel, but they always bloody stop to see the freak show that is 10 dogs all out together:rolleyes: and gorp at my akita, who could not give 2 tosses and will walk right by them or anything like they don't exist:D

If I spot a person without a dog I call Otto back and either keep him at heel or put him on the lead, same if I see someone with a dog that is either at heel or on the lead. If they have a dog that is off the lead and running around, I leave Otto to do what he pleases. Generally he runs over for a sniff and then ignores them, people are only interesting to him if they say hello or make a fuss about him!

For people without dogs I call Henry back and either walk him to heel or put him on a lead most of the time. On busy paths I tend to leave him to it as he gets bored with people, and ignores them - it's if they're the first person we've met in ages that he tends to get a bit excited and greet them like longlost buddies:o Although we were looked at on Saturday by one woman as though I'd just sicked him onto her, and all he had done was to sniff her knee in passing - really, if people are that anti-animal, I would suggest a nice walk in the local park over a walk in the hills, where dogs are de rigeur!

People with dogs offlead - I leave him to it:D

I call mine back and put them in a "down" (mind you Skye is always on her long line so she is reeled in) but the other 2 run free until I call them.
People often comment on how well behaved they are, but I think it is just good manners to have them under control.
Wish everyone was the same. I meet some real idiots out there!

I am really lucky as we never meet anyone on our daily walks - it is only us or the gamekeeper or the odd livery on the fileds so all the dogs are 'friends' and frankly far to busy chasing hares etc to bother with each other!!:D

Even our big weekend walks in different places are usually fairly people and dog quiet - my two just ignore them as they generally have their heads stuck in something more interesting!!:D
