I came across a lady and (i presume) her daughter. They had parked up and were watching some wild ponies..the little girl was so excited to see a horse! I stopped as I got to them and they came and patted ponio on the shoulder..she was so excited! The lady took a photo of the girl by us

and said 'thank you so much youve just made her day' and off we went again

It just made me realise how lucky we really are to have our own horses/ponies, and how I probably used to be like that when I was little!!
Then it started raining

Aww, that's really sweet.

I always make sure I stop if I can see children that want to fuss Jazmine. I think it's a really nice thing to do. But it also shows that were not all the snobbish horse riders people make us out to be.

By the way, I love your signature.

That is a lovely story. I'm glad that you are a kind person and that you stopped and made the little girl so happy. I always stop if there are any little children showing an interest in Finella. Like you say Rhapsody_x, it's good PR if nothing else!

Rhapsody_x - Yes it does make us look not quite as snobby as some people think we are!

FinellaGlen - I wasnt going to stop as we were right in the middle of the wild ponies they were looking at, but the girl was so excited, and they looked the kind of people that dont live in the country..they werent sure where to pat my mare, and the lady was very wary of coming near her. I was glad to be of service

I am always in two minds whether to stop as I think people might think you are saying...... here peasant, would you like to pat my horse as you are obviously too poor to have one of your own to pat.....

So usually I smile and ride past unless they ask

Sounds like you really made that little girls day, what a nice thing to do.

As I usually have my grandkids on ponies we often come across families out with their kids, we always stop and chat if it is obvious that the kids want to stroke the ponies, the same goes for dog walkers, we stop and pass the time of day, gives them time to put their dogs onlead and lets them see that not all horsy people are snooty!!! Not that I know any snooty ones really, everyone I know are just down to earth, generally very nice horsy people!! Just like me really!

It's so nice to read stories like this; very nice of you to take the time to make a little girl's day.

There are often benefits - certainly over here. I was out riding one day and a farmers wife came out to speak to us; she's a distant neighbour but I had never met her before. Anyhow she had her grandchildren staying for the weekend and they came running across a field when they saw us riding. The children very politely asked if they could have a sit on a horse. I was on the little grey QH, Spirit so I said yes of course they could have a little ride on her if they wished. The little girl's face lit up and she was beaming. I borrowed one of the other rider's hats and popped it on the little girl and lifted her up onto Spirit. Then I led her up the hill and back down again - she was absolutely thrilled! Her little brother had a short ride too, but it was really the little girl who was smitten.

Anyhow, the neighbour visited me at my farm later on and told me about all of their trails that are on their farm. They have about 1,000 acres of farmland and it has trails all over it. She said that I was welcome to use any of their trails; which we do now. Actually one trail in particular is very useful to us as it finishes off, and makes one ride a circular ride. So although I expected nothing more than a thank you, I ended up with so much more.

I was hacking out with a mate from the yard once and a wee girl and her daddy were watching from the roadside - he prompted the little girl to speak (she was about six) and she asked what the horses names were.
They were probably expecting 'dobbin' or 'neddy' or something so we were a bit embarrassed to have to say "Er, Rinaldo and Donatella!"

That is so lovely.

My daughter and I were doing a long hack in the holidays and we stopped off at a pub. A little girl stood watching us holding the horses, so I asked if she would like to come over and meet them ( with her Dad ) - she was so excited just to be able to pat them, and as she was being driven away in the car she was waving like mad at us with the biggest grin on her face.

I never take it for granted that we are so lucky to have our horses, and I remember how I felt as a child, desperately wanting a pony of my own.

i'm glad I'm not the only one who actually gets a buzz out of seeing a childs or even adults face light up when you let them pat your horse or pony, i also love waving at little kids in cars who are grinning and waving and breaking their necks trying to watch as they drive by.

We try and always speak to the people we meet

Our first horse used to have quite a fan club, comprised mainly of old ladies
grin.gif
He was a greedy lad and got very used to being fed Date Cake, flapjacks etc. We never passed an elderly lady without him giving her a good looking over to see if she edibles with her
