Went for second look at a nissan xtrail 2.2 DCI sport today, fell in love with it again but.................. talking to my dad who has towed caravans for years afterwards put me off slightly , i want to tow 1380 kg [ 13.3 pony and ifor willias 505 ] Dad seemsto think that as i have never towed before something heavier is needed, totally confused now . Anyone else tow with a nissan xtrail ?????????

We have one :D
Had it for 3 years now and bought it second hand sort of as someone had it for a month then sold it on, i think its a nice car and have no problems so far :)
forgot to say my mum who had never towed before towed my pony for 2 hours without a problem :D

They seems very popular , the lady that sold the car had a towbar fitted to pull a horsebox then unfortunatly had an accident and now just hacks so the towbar has,nt been used, still very tempted i must say, I will only be going to local shows and living in Norfolk i have no hills to go up !!!!

I love mine, it's 03 reg and had it from new, I tow 1.6t livestock trailer with it, it has never let me down.
It's also comfy and quite nippy for normal driving, well, it was, now it's getting on a bit at 135K miles, half of which towing.

If thats all you will ever tow then it will fine.. you just need to think about if things change and you need more capacity? remember what will do a lot will do a little but not the other way round....and depreciation is a very big part of running a new car, a big older 4x4 might work out no more expensive to run over a few years....

We have one and we love it. My Mum said she will never change it now she has it. We bought it to tow while we still used trailers, and it towed our Bateson Derby and a 15.2hh TB no problem at all.

im looking for one now so far either sold when get there or people mess you about but must be quite good as don't stay for sale long. I want to tow cant 1600kg and it will be fine for that the only negative i have heard is the turbos go on some.

i tow (well my bf and my friend) a cheval liberte with a 550kg horse with a xtrail 2.0l tdci or a xtrail 2.2l dci sport. no problems it can tow both horses but never tried as both horses are at different levels of competition and only just started getting used to trailer.

its the turbo on the older style 2L that go. the one in the OP is the new version and they have fixed the problem

I have a 03 Nissan X Trail 2.2L, I tow an Ifor Williams HB510, my horses are both very differnet 15.1hh TB and a 17hh Warmblood! The car tows them one at a time fine, but will not tow both, for a start it would be illegal with both in as the max weight it can tow is 2000kg and second, i tried it once on a small local journey and i really has to get my foot down as the car really struugled. I have towed two 15hh in it and again it manages but would be very boarderline on the weight and struggles to get off slightly damp fields etc. My advice is if you only want to tow one horse its great and lovely to drive as its my everyday car too. But if you want to tow 2 horses go for something bigger, I am currently looking at changing mine for an Mitsubishi Shogun Sport.

Right, my friend had/has one, it's a Renault Laguna engine I think, noted for Turbo's going at about 100,000 miles, guess what, hers did just that, then something else expensive, then something else, all very expensive, anyway I think after spend a fortune on it, it was ok, and towed a single lighweight trailer with one Pony in it, unfortunately some idiot ran straight into the back of her at a junction and wrote it off, got a replacement and think that one ok.

Basically, if it's comeing up to the 90,000 miles mark I personally would stear well clear, I am not anti Nissan as I love my old V reg Terrano, but even then you have to get the right one, the newer ones had lots of trouble with the Speedo's going wappy, made in Mexico I think ?

Be aware that when towing whether it has one, two or no horses in, VOSA look at the MAM plate (maximum allowable gross weight) on the trailer and then check what your car can legally tow.

They are very hot on it up here near Mold as they have a brand new shiny weighbridge just off the A55 and aren't afraid to use it. Swines.

As long as the Ifor and the X-trail match, then it should be a lovely vehicle.

i would look at the 3.2 shogun much better economy build and powerfull will tow 3 tons swb or 3.5 lwb , thankfully they dont make the sport thingy anymore it was a hidious estate version of the old and equlily dire L200 pick up with no power and thirsty too...

Sadly most4x4 nissans are made in spain now, the build and component quality is now poor, they used to be fantastic when they were japanese a friend had two navaras new shape the first on was in the garrage more than he had it, for back axles, paint faults, electrical, and finaly a new engine at 60 odd k his second one wasnt much better and drank fuel he gave up with it after 18monthes and now has a defender...
