jay hunted for a fair few sesions before he did his leg in the paddock.

he is fabby around dogs/people/traffic but put him in a group of horses & he turns into a hyper lad who is wound up very fast.

we hacked out with another ex hunter a few weeks ago who was a total nutter, his loaners reason was he had hunted & would always act like a hunter

now having never hunted myself or infact owned a hunter is it true that a horse that is used to hunting will always act like they did on the field or can they change?

It depends on the horse. For a small few hunting 'blows their brains' and they never quite seem the same again. For others it makes no difference to how they are when not hunting, and many are improved by the experience.

Wow, you're a lovely GF! I wouldn't let my OH touch anything promising or proven I have in the yard...not for hunting anyway! lol.

I know...apparently TB's are too leggy for hunting!

My TB is currently the master (who hunts hounds) first horse. He hasn't got a bad word to say about him. Although we were placed last in a working hunter class last year (we went clear and I'm a showing person) and the comment from the judge was 'he couldn't last a day's hunting' - the whipper in was also in the class and piped up with 'he managed to carry the horn all last season' - very embarrasing, but also amusing! Perhaps the judge had the same idea about TBs.

my irish sports horse is still excitable with other horses and when he hears a dog his ears go foward. so the suggestion once a hunter always a hunter , is probably right!
