I have just recently past an inspection to adpot an English Springer and have been offered to visit a 9 year old dog which is up for adpotion.

My current dog is 2 years old an I have been naturally wondering how this could impact him. My dog is quite submissive with other dogs, spoilt and a bit of a whirlwind.

(Just bought the Dog Whisperer book for guidance on that issue!)

I understand there will be an adjustment period but I was wondering what are your experiences on bringing a new dog into the family?

I introduce new dogs into my home and my own dogs everyday....be it a boarder or a rescue...I just bring them straight on in....however Im not a panicker and I dont fuss....I think in a situation where u are worried that something may happen and a little anxious....the dogs will pickup on this...so maybe take them for walk together to get over the initial meet.....One thing I never do is leave dogs together when Im not here...and for this they are crated seperatley.
Stick to a routine, and be firm in any agressive or over the top behaviour with another dog.

we've introduced a pup to an older dog twice (different dogs). Both times the older dogs sulked for a few weeks and then got over it. The pups on both occassions were far too excited over being in the world to notice. One of the older ones did suddenly find an interest in chews and toys - having never been bothered before - just because the new pup loved them.
