One dog stops and the other one starts!

Chasing sheep that is.

Star did it a couple of times when we first got her, we were probably bad dog owners then and it was our fault, but after a couple of smacked bots, she hasn't done it since and leaves them alone..

But Alfie has.

Unfortunately we live in an area which has a very high population of sheep. First time he did it we were in some woods and he managed to sniff them out in a nearby field (we didn't see them) and today we were on some moors where there never normally are any, and we didn't/couldn't see them. He's very keen in a terrier type way and there is no stopping him once he gets going! They turned and faced him after a while and he came back.

I know how wrong this is and that he should have been on the lead, so please don't slag me off, but we could really do with getting out of this or he will have to be on the lead more or less all the time.

Help???

Apparently if you put the dog in a pen with a Scotch ewe (God knows if it has to be a Scotch one - I am sure any ewe will do!) it will frighten the life out of the dog and never chase sheep again!

Yup - get in touch with a farmer and get a ewe with a lamb to be penned, then put your dog in with it (you could cuddle the cute little lamb while this is going on..).

Unless it's a mastiff or something, the ewe will pretty much always win, and the dog will not forget.

Having said that - my dogs are almost always on long leads just in case - and my pointer has been verified safe with sheep by a top pointer man who had her for training - just don't want them shot TBH.

Thanks guys, he's a tiny little BT so I don't think he'd stand much chance against a full grown sheep!!! But that might be the only resolution - little shite!

We keep them both on the lead when we know sheep are around, but Alf is a little bugger and finds them out!

He got a big telling off and smacked botty from OH today so hopefully he might think next time!

Get one of those MasterPlus Pro Spray Dog Training Collar web page , it will help you to stop him chasing and to train him to come back to you.

Alternatively you could wait till a farmer shoots him.............problem solved!!!

I personally don't think it is good welfare for either sheep or dog to do as suggested re: penning, could end up in one/other getting seriously injured not to mention stress.
I think it is a lead case and training, perhaps borrowing a sheep in field and using a long lead in conjunction to train him to ignore the sheep.

.....the collar...they are very effective for this type of behaviour.

Thanks guys, we got one of those to try and stop him chasing Star and yapping his little head off (Dan thinks he's embarrassing!

) but it didn't seem to make any difference... not sure it worked properly though... might be worth another try.

It takes time, training and timing............Call dog, give warning beep, then spray.......if odourless spray doesn't work you can up the anti with Citronella spary they do and if that doesn't work they also do Mustard!!!! You also have to be worth coming back too (in the dogs eyes)!!!
