The girl who works my gelding for me in the week texted me yesterday to say that he wasn't quite himself - quieter than usual and a little tucked up. She left him in with some hay until I got there. He looked a bit strange in his tummy - almost like he was clenching and unclenching it. He was eating, pooing and passing wind as normal. He wasn't depressed, maybe a little quieter than usual but since he associates me with tea time he was fairly interested in me. He just has speedibeet, chaff and lo cal balancer (and some magnesium oxide). His usual routine is in at night with a full haybar and out in the day. Has been on this routine for months - nothing has changed in the last week or two (same hay batch, chaff bag, etc). He's 8. Tb x welsh D.
Apparently he's still tucked up this morning but had eaten all his hay, his breakfast and his stable was it's usual poo-y mess. He's gone out.
If he's still not 100% later then I'll book vet for tomorrow. I'm usually one who calls the vet very easily and if he was off his food or not pooing for england I'd be on the phone now. The yard are keeping an eye on him and will let me know if he looks any different throughout the day and I'll be able to go up at about 4 to see him myself.

Ring vet and explain, see what they advise. Better to be safe. Hope he is back to normal soon, OP.

Also, repeat the mantra: it is good to get my horse used to seeing the vet and I enjoy talking to my vet, so I have no regrets in paying for the callout.

<this last part keeps me from crying over my tiny little bank balance :)>

Thanks folks!
Advice taken and have just rung the vets. He's been seeing the vet very regularly for a back issue so he's very well vet-trained, lol. I couldn't speak to his usual vet but spoke to one of the others and she says doesn't sound urgent but probably worth getting him looked at if I'm worried and it persists. She's also going to ask his usual vet (who he last saw last friday) to ring me to decide whether what I'm seeing might be expected at this stage of his rehab (she didn't say to expect this and it doesn't really fit but I'm not the vet...). If I'm still not happy later today then I'll ask vet to see him tomorrow (which is free callout day for us).

UPDATE & CLOSURE: Myself and the girl who works him for me still weren't 100% happy with him that evening even though we couldn't really pinpoint why. We wondered whether he'd dropped a bit of weight which always emphasises how long in the body he is but he stil looked a bit tucked up. I decided to err on the side of caution and had the vet out next day. She couldn't find anything wrong with him and by the weekend he was back to his usual self. So storm in a teacup - he was definitely not feeling 100% on Tuesday but a few days later he was back to normal. Horses, eh?!

Why was this moved now when it was not moved when originally posted? My update was to inform those who will have seen the thread last week when it was in Tack Room but it will now be missed by those for whom it was intended.......

Because it has the word vet in the title and this is the vet forum I guess.

Good news tho, best to be safe than sorry!

I understand that but why not move it last week when first posted - the title was the same?
But it doesn't matter because you were one of the users I was hoping would find it and you did :)

Glad to hear everything's ok! For future reference I'd take your horses TPR regularly for the next few weeks so you have his *normal*. Then if he's ever off colour you can take it again and if there's a difference you have a starting point and some numbers to tell the Vet.

It's a very useful thing to know!
