Hi all. I need a new trailer for my horse and my daughters' two small ponies. I'd assumed that an Ifor Williams 510XL or 610 was the obvious solution, but DH has just got me all excited by sending me links to all sorts of French makes (Fautras, Cheval Liberte) which are very fancy looking and have some living. And then there's Equitrek as well. Or at the other end of the price scale, an old Rice Beaufort treble would fit them all in.

Does anyone else travel one horse/two ponies in a trailer. What do you use? Do you like it? What is best value for money? We would be prepared to spend a bit more if it was value for money ie. you got some living and better quality ride etc. We mostly go hunting and pony clubbing though, no shows, so perhaps having living would be a bit excessive?

Any reviews/opinions gratefully received!

Just being logical.. I would look carefully at the costs and see when the breakover point for a lorry comes into play!. a 3 horse obviously trailer would need a larger tow vehicle and if you want living etc, suspect that will up the price as well. Maybe if you created a spreadsheet with all the costs you could see what is a better financial option?

I have a Wessex treble trailer, similar in build type to the old style Ifors. Love it, spacious and robust but fairly light for its size. Bought from a dealer in Sussex who sold several other makes so I could compare. The Cheval ones were rubbish build quality I felt, very flimsy, and the Equitrek you either love or don't, I didn't, again build quality very poor for the money. Faustas were very expensive and Rice were too (over 10k for a three horse) with a very long build time of 3 months. The Wessex offered me plenty of space, will carry 3 x 16.2. They also build the Pegasus trailers with living if you are feeling flush!

Thanks Bobbly, very useful. I currently have an HB511 (new model Ifor) and I am not impressed at all with the build quality - too much plastic to break and things keep coming loose. I would rather have something simpler and basic and quality.

Luci DH is a complete petrolhead, reads car adverts like other people read books, so he is doing the spreadsheets and will ensure that the costs stack up! However, I will be using it so need to have some input, plus all of a sudden he is getting excited about these fancy pants trailers. We will need a new tow car so will trade in current tow car and his sports car (true love!!) for probably a VW Toureg. He is dead set against getting a lorry due to maintenance costs, tax etc etc.

That is useful! and very good that he gets to have input and involvement!. I agree about maintenance etc, but would also just look at other things such as comfort for a reasonably large family out at a show!. I was thinking about the inbetween times at a show, not just the transport and somewhere children can comfortably change and adults can sit down at may well be a real need! it would be interesting to see the difference in price and space for a small lorry and a 3 horse trailer. I am not focused either way, I do agree that actually choosing the option which is affordable takes priority!
