Can you ride a horse down a one way road aginst the flow of traffic?....If the alternative route includes 2 round abouts and a busy village centre!!!
We have a one way road on our hack route which is actually wide enough for two cars down side by side so there is plenty of room to pass our horses,we can also see from the top the entrance to the lane so we can pull over out of the way of anything if need be,the road is hardly used and is only about 100m long.....We got moaned at last night by a pedestrian for doing this.my argument was they were walking there four legged friend down it why cant i?????????
HELP???

We have a similar situation in our village and I sometimes go the wrong way too; however I dread meeting anybody and always feel guilty as I think the Highway Code is quite clear - we are not meant to do it on horses.

When riding on the road you should

keep to the left
keep both hands on the reins unless you are signalling
keep both feet in the stirrups
not carry another person
not carry anything which might affect your balance or get tangled up with the reins
keep a horse you are leading to your left
move in the direction of the traffic flow in a one-way street
never ride more than two abreast, and ride in single file on narrow or busy roads and when riding round bends

so its a should not a must and it also says:

Avoid roundabouts whereever possible.

It its only 100m, I would just trot down it!

Hello Spiritedrider - I think I may have a loophole for you, although other forum users may have to tell me that I am wrong! My understanding is that if you are riding a horse then you are, to all intents and purposes, a vehicle and must obey the highway code. If you are leading a horse, however, you are a considered to be a pedestrian - this means that you should be able to lead your horses the "wrong" way up a wrong way street as pedestrians, correctly, should walk against the flow of traffic.

Check it out, but I think this will be right...
