Only one week to go, and she is not impressed, can't sit very well and when lying down she sort of puts her lump down and then slumps to the floor, bless. We made her a whelping box at the weekend and put all her bedding in it. Huh, she's not having any of that, she has her eye on the cupboard under the stairs in the kitchen, and everytime someone goes in there she sneaks in and starts sniffing around.

Aaww bless her! When Molly had her puppies we had her whelping box and a fleece bedding in etc - she was having none of it. She whelped a day early and snook off to her kennel and gave birth to the first puppy in there. I took her and the puppy back to the house & ended up taking the fleece bedding out & replacing it with the shredded tissue bedding which is in her kennel. She popped them out every half hour after that - they tend to rook up the bedding when getting contractions and she was not able to do so with the fleece bedding.

Have you got your whelping kit ready?

you need to prepare yourself for all scenarios I am afraid (well you don't have to but best to be).

The umbilical chords, some peeps let the mother chew the chords (I didn't) as I have known of 1 mother who chewed it too close to the puppy and damaged the pup - I had also researched this & there were some reports that pulling the chords excessivley can cause hernias. I cut mine but there was one chord which snapped close to the puppys body and was bleeding so we just tied the steralised cat gut around the chord to stop the blood. (I am sure other posters will have different ideas, methods and advice but that is how I did it & others in my breed too)

Hope that helps

Oh, take the bl**dy door off the cupboard under the stairs, clear it out & let her go in there if she wants to!

We have actually done this & unless it's in a part of the house that gets roasting hot, it makes a great 'cave' - you can put a baby gate across later on if you want!
That particular bitch's first choice was the 2 foot deep hole she kept digging (& I filled in again on a daily basis! LOL) under one of the hedges, so when she decided that cupboard under the stairs seemed an acceptable alternative, we said 'Ooh yes, in you go then!'

I prefer them to be in the bedroom, where I can keep an eye on them overnight but if they're really not happy with that.........?
