Will try to keep it brief!

Idea only came to me last night that this could really suit me due to circumstances & just... me being me! :p
Has anyone done one? If so which/with who? (link please?!) Would you recommend it? Did you find it easy to motivate yourself?
Are they useful?

Mostly interested in Equine business/equine science... or both! :D

Thanks, Sol x.

Hello :D

Not sure what your circumstances are.

I attempted to do an online course before coming to uni. I found it really hard to motivate myself, and I was really annoyed to find that after all the money I had paid, that if I wanted to print material off or wanted a paper copies I had to pay extra. There were forums that you could go to for support and questions but i don't think its the same as person to person. I guess it just depends on jobs/bills/horses etc and how motivated and self discipling you are.

I am now doing an Equine Studies and Business course and I think I would find it nearly impossible to do it at home. Things like my anatomy module, it was really difficult, and however much I did not enjoy dissecting parts of the horse it really helped me to learn. The same with nutrition with doing faecal egg counts and feed anaylsis. These things only being possible to do at a college or university.

Are there any local colleges or universities doing a course by you? Maybe ring them and see if you can do something part time?

Good luck with what ever you choose to do :D

Oooh really interested in this as i had the same thought not too long ago, also considered college courses but i can't justify giving up my job, and the closest colleges that run the courses range from 45mins - 1.5 hours away :(

Myerscough is the most local that I'm aware of, I was previously considering going to Hartpury after doing my A-levels. No idea how I could afford that though, especially if I chose to keep my horse, as its a hell of a distance. I'd also prefer not to leave the area long term. Reaseheath is close, but doesn't really offer much.

I generally work better alone (providing I can get support when necessary - courses I've looked at have done this by phone/email? Plus I have plenty of horsey people around who I could talk to!) and don't work at all in anything group/class like!! Hence thinking this is a far better option, along with other things.

Can I ask where you are doing the course that you are doing now?? :)

Thank you!

I'm at Writtle College, in Essex!! Myerscough....few nice men there :D :D.

I can understand the cost putting you off if you wanted to take your horse. If you work well on you own that maybe good for you! I just found it really difficult lol!

Just think about every option before you do it. Its expensive either way!

The course I did was nearly £600 (just an a - level) that was only online material that you could not print and didn't include exams!

Its worth doing though I love learning all about horses :D

I shall take a look at their website then, finding it hard to find the places that do the courses I want, good to know there are a few more options though :) haha!

Suppose they can't work for everyone! Just hope I'm guessing correctly if I do decide to try one! Will definitely check about the printing thing though if that's the case!!

Learning about horses is always good - I started teaching myself about colour genetics once for no real reason.... it was good!! :D xD

Oh, well google UCAS, once on there is an option for course search, and the search by course, you can then look at all the equine courses on offer at all uni's and college in the UK.

I did my equine course at open-college.co.uk (i think thats right...)

It was the same as A levels... as i was already studying a degree but needed it to get onto further education believe it or not :D

I enjoyed it so much i did a level 4 advanced diploma (science) which got me onto masters :)

I think at the time mine was around £400 per course - well worth it :)

Am looking at the distance learning courses on the equine studies site too!

Out of interest what employment are you hoping to get once you have your qualifications???

I am personally not looking for qualification, lucky I know. I have tried working with horses and cant afford it so will keep my boring office job to afford the horse. Thats why online is defo better for me.

To be honest, I have no idea what I'd like to do in the long term - always been interested in running a yard (full livery/training?) but may be aiming a bit high! I'm not overly fussed in the long run as long as I can afford to live, fully aware I may end up having to sell my own horse eventually :/
