Hi everyone!

For the last few years I've been trying to do new things that put me out of my comfort zone (because you don't know if you're going to like something until you try). This years' goal is to take part in a show. I have never been to one and it's all gobbldy-gook to me, so my question is- how useful is online showing as preparation for 'live' showing? Presumably it would help get us up to scratch with turn out?
I'm not concerned with winning or placing in anything obviously, it's about the experience, but at the same time I'd like to prepare as well as possible so that we both have a good experience!

If the element you're wanting is the experience, I'm not sure online showing will provide that for you - that's the one part that's missing! :D (you get the winning and placing...) ;) You're right though, you may get feedback on turnout - but nothing the forum won't tell you if you asked here!

How about visiting some shows as a spectator first? Or helping a friend as a groom/extra pair of hands? It's not really the season but some riding clubs will be doing indoor shows.

Thanks nevin's run! Yes I had thought about watching a few shows. I wondered about helping someone who's going to a show, but I thought my lack of experience might end up being a hindrance!

Just go and watch some shows. See a range from local to county level of the type of classes you are interested in. Then you will get an idea of standards- and type- wise where you and your horse might fit, and can see the expected turn out, schooling and performance standards and class formats. And look online at photographers for pics of said shows and classes for turnouts. And books and society rulebooks will help you with technically correct turn out and expectations for different classes. I've never done online showing but I can't see it replicating a real life experience at all.
