As you may have seen in Soapbox, I lost my little greyhound Jura on Monday night. This leaves me with a rescue lurcher, Talisker, who so far (touch wood) seems to be adapting OK to be an 'only dog' and is loving sleeping on my bed at night

I had always planned to get another rescue greyhound when I lost Jura or Talisker, they are lovely dogs to have around. The only thing now is I am not sure how soon to approach the rescue people? I work full time, but am only 15 mins from work so go home at lunchtime to be with the dogs and let them out. Tal has never been an 'only dog' so I want him to have some company rather than being left on his own, but equally I don't want to rush into anything. Also I am going away to MK 3DE for 4 days at the end of May - if I just had Tal then I would take him with me, if I had two then they would go into kennels.

Sorry, this is very long for a simple question - would you wait until after MK 3DE, or would you approach the rescue people now??? Well done if you have managed it this far

Think I would wait as there wouldn't be that long for new dog to settle before being shipped 'back to kennels' (which it may find distressing).

I would also wait to get the dog, although you could approach the rescue now and say you are going to be looking for a new dog, but that you won't be taking it straight away.
That way if there is a dog you like, you can start to build up a relationship with it at the centre and introduce Talisker and make sure they get on, going out for walks etc and then when you come back from MK 3DE you can bring new doggie home

Thanks guys, I phoned the rescue people today and someone is going to phone me and come out to talk to me and home check me again (despite the fact I have already had 3 dogs from the same rescue people...

I will set the ball rolling but explain I don't want one until after MK 3DE - or if they have a lovely one I could always not go to the event/take them BOTH with me

I agree with GinaB. I know the home check is a pain but really i think it's good they are doing it, seems quite responsible to me
