Unfortunately, its not just in the US that people get shot by their dogs. Over here in France it is not unheard of for hunters to get shot by their dogs after carelessly leaving their guns lying around, though they're generally not in bed at the time. One guy shot himself while using his shotgun to dislodge a partridge that was stuck in a tree/bush - he probably should have unloaded it first.
