Not sure this is in the right place, but it is horsey so here goes. I'm a vet student and I've been offered the chance to take up a month long student externship at Liphook. Thing is, I'm already going there for 2 weeks and I'm a bit indecisive about making it a month.

It would look fab on my CV and would give me a lot of experience, BUT you have to do out of hours all the time you are there, which means very little sleep. If it was the only placement I had to do this summer I would do it in a shot, but when I get home I'd have another 8 weeks to do.

Not sure if I'm going to get enough benefit out of the extra two weeks, to risk being soooo tired and useless for the other placements I have to do. But I also don't want to turn it down and then regret it. Argh.

Has anyone done anything like this, or works at Liphook, who can help in my decision?

I may be able to, if I can organise my other placements that way. I've also just re-read the email and it says externs are allowed a day off each week, so that would make it easier.

I would do the month but I can survice on little sleep or almost none as you say it looks better on your cv and it shows commitment as you chose to extend it,

It will be very tiring but you know it is only short term. When I was nursing at an equine hospital I used to do out of hours every other night & seemed to get caught for alternate weekends (8.30 Friday morning until 8.30 Monday night with no sleep isn't a good thing!). I survived that for a year but it did take it out of me. At least you can chill out on your day off each week which should be enough to help you get through a month of serious grafting and it will look amazing on your CV!
