well, the yard i keep my horse at has just bought a 14.2hh, 4 year old pony called Lulu. She has been professionaly backed and was bought to be played polo, btu they want her to be an allrounder so they have asked me to teach her to jump with the help of the guy who runs the polo there! i havent done this before, btu we are going to take it very slowly. this little mare is so sweet. shes a proper "fluffy". i went to find matt and saw her and i was just lying over her back and she didnt even flinch. i then plaited her mane as we decided it was too shaggy and we wanted a retro pony. she now has alternate pink and black bands- cool pony

anyway, can anyone offer me advice on how to teach her to jump, correctly. we dont want her to be some world beating pony, just a genuine PC pony, that can hunt, jump and play polo.
so any adivce on how tp start, and progress from there. she has never been jumped and has recently been brought back in from being turned away. is it too early to start loose schooling her over fences? pplease tell me everything re. teaching a horse to jump!!
thank you

ps. please do not say oh well youll need to get a professional trainer etc. etc. i dont want to hear that, i just want to know what/when/how we should be doing this.. thank you

Well, congrats firstly!
Teaching a horse to jump is pretty simple, well I thought it was!
Start with trot poles etc, getting her to pick her feet up etc, and make sure she is straight and sensible approaching them. Then rise them slightly, and then start with a small cross pole, and do lots of grid work before doing a course, so it teaches her to stay straight.
I'm sure someone will have more advice than me, but thats how I taught a pony to jump!

Also, make sure before you canter to the jump, that the pony is working in an outline and keeps their head down-stopping the risk of knocking a pole. make sure not to rush and only go up higher if they are taking care over the fences
