We went to a horse and tack auction to sell a few saddles and ended up coming home with a horse.

I have two rules.
1. Don't buy an adult horse from an auchion
2. Don't buy out of sympathy

I broke both and ended up buying a fully registered shire mare! The poor thing is in a terrible state and under weight, but she is still so trusting and compliant.

I dont see many pure breds around, just shire crosses. So my question is........ Would it make a good riding horse??

I had an 18.3 shire gelding on loan, he was lovely! They are big dopes really, and can move well for big horses. I'm sure you will have loads of fun with her, just mind low branches when you go on a hack!! :)

wow! ive always wanted a shire or shire x but always worried that the cost of keeping it would be double that of a smaller horse! at school a friend had a 17.2hh shire x who she competed and he was amazing.... quite nimble actually! I do agree about not buying at auction but hopefully in this case you will be lucky, she sounds great! Even if she doesnt make a decent riding horse you could always breed from her, i believe that decent pure bred shire foals are hard to come by these days!

Two thoughts...
1) have you checked back ground of the mare? I only ask because, as you say, they are quite rare and someone was looking for a stolen one on here quite recently (unusual paleish colouring I think)
2) wow! Lovely!

The cavalry use them as drum horses, not because they are so big... because they are so calm! I know one was an eventer first (can't remember if that was one of there full shires but think it may have been) and now has a second career in the army.

Have fun (and post pictures!)

The shire passport states that she was bred by a shire breeder in Angelsey called M. Lloyd Owen. Any one know him?

He bred her, sold her , then bought her back. He is the last registered keeper, but ofcourse this doesn't mean he owned her last. I would love to know more. I've tried ringing him, but with no luck. A different thread appeal maybe.

I will post pics and updates :)
