Is anyone else as hopeless as me when it comes to "budgeting" for their horse or just being generally sensible? I only meant to ring up the trailer place to ask them if I could come and look at the new Ifor Williams trailers but I accidentally landed up ordering one on the spot! I just can't help myself

But on the plus side it is very shiny and blue and it means we can FINALLY start going to some shows. Hurrah

I am terrible - just can't stop spending!!

also have ex racer - well not really ex racer, bred to race & in training for a year but never got to the track.

hows the retraining going?

hello and welcome to the H&H forum

The retraining is going ok. The difficulty with mine is that he raced (steeplechased) for years so getting it out of his system is taking a while. But we seem to have brakes now which is a start and the jumping is going very well. Although have to admit that even though I do lots of ground schooling with him he is about as interested in dressage as I am so I dont think we will be setting the world of eventing alight any time soon!

How is yours going?

Going slowly!! Have similar issues with the schooling, Dillon's attention span is appalling and he uses all the diversion tactics he can think of! Favourite is spooking at imaginary creatures and he is so sharp have to sit tight! However we are making slow progress and can now steer, stop and trot circles which is a massive improvement!!

How long have you had yours?

I know what you mean about the spooking. Sam has the attention span of a small white mouse and sometimes I wonder if a dose of Ritalin (the stuff they give to hyperactive kids) might be an idea

I have had him 3 years but for the first year he (and I) were both lame so only really started schooling in earnest for the last year and a half. And since December have been focusing on jumping (SJ and x country) which we LOVE. Although as you can imagine speed can be a bit of an issue

I must have the only ex sprinter that doesnt like going forward no wonder he was no good at the races.Hes always scared whats round the corner never mind making progress lol

Having looked up your blog and seen how fab Sam looks I feel better you have had him 3 years! I've had Dillon 5 months and couldn't ride for the first 2 as he was too poor and weak.

had same experience as you though in that I bought him as a hack and first time I rode him I started imagining us X Country!!

Thank you very much - I think he is looking very well as well but I suppose I am biased

If you ever feel like you are having a bad day with your retraining then always feel free to have a look at my blog. It should make you feel a whole lot better

When it comes to ex racers I think the most important thing going is time, and patience. So good luck with it all!
