When you see a horse who has a set price on them say 4k, but are open to offers, what would you come down to etc if the horse was what you were looking for?
Its irrelevant the 4k but what would you try and get your money down too, £200, £500 etc??
I suppose what I am trying to say is "what is a sensible offer?"

depends entirely on what they are worth-i would say go for at least 500 if they are not worth the full price-as you can always come back!

Depends on how nice the horse is, if it is as described and what is wrong with it!!! If it is the perfect horse I might offer a couple of hundred less but you dont want to risk missing out. If there is something a little risky about the horse eg it can be very quirky then I'd be a lot braver with a lower offer if I wanted it.

Loving your dalamtian BTW mincingpie - markings look very similar to my spotty dog

A rule f thumb I was told was 20%(£3200 for £4K) off if you don't really like it, 10% if you like it(£3600 for £4K), and if you absolutely love it and it is perect the full value. But that assumes you were looking at a horse where the full price is within your budget.

I offered 2.5K less for my horse as I simply could not raise the full asking price. Got him for that offer too. Some people are genuine on the whole home more important than price thing.

Also nothing seems to sell ATM so worth a cheeky offer IMO!

Yes, i think people should be alot braver on making offers for horses, what you get and what you want are two very different things... unless of course its a very special horse and you can really hold out then.

Think 10% is the norm.
If you insult the buyer some will have nothing more to do with you [ I used to work for someone like that] but if they need to sell then you can make a silly offer. You know the situation you must weigh it up and decide.
Good luck

I wish I could find a horse that I liked enough to buy & try out an offer !!! I'll probably be so desperate to buy I'll just pay out the asking price.

i just sold my rising 4yr old who was advertised at 5k.
i got offered 4.5k which i declined and said i wasnt in a hurry to sell him ( which was true ) he then drove off the yard.
2 minutes later my mobile rang. it was him offering 4750 which i took! he really wanted the horse and i wasnt fussed whether he went or not which is why it worked in my favour!
my new horse was up for 6200 and i got him for 5k!!!!
