Right, I have never shown anything in my life and I've only been to a couple of shows ever as a spectator :p
Ollie is 7 and currently being backed and hasn't done much either so it will be his first show too.
So we're both total novices :D We don't usually show our ponies and it is just for a bit of fun :)
I am also on a limited budget so I'm looking for cheap and cheerful :) It may also be the only time we go so obviously don't want to spend loads if that's the case.

I have looked through a few threads on here and have made a list of things I need to get or sort out.
Can you have a look at it and see if it sounds like everything I need, whether there's anything I don't need, and if the combination of clothes I've listed will go together and are right to wear? :o

This is Ollie :)

Hat – Blue velvet
Shirt – cream/lemon - should this be short sleeved or long?
Tie – is red the best colour?
Black waistcoat (I can't afford a tweed jacket :( )
Trousers – Beige/cream
Boots – short jodhpur boots - I don't have any of these, where is best to get a pair cheaply that will do for showing?
Brown gloves

Elastic for number so I don't need to use the show string
Hair plaited or in bun/hairnet

Footware - so long as it is smart and easy to run in you will be fine.

Shirt - either or, I prefer long sleeves though.

Hair - tied back in a bun.

Tie - anything that is dull or a pony club tie is fine.

Waistcoat - absolutely fine for Welshies! In fact prefered to tweed jackets.

Don't forget your gloves!

Lol! I'm glad you corrected that, I just googled pony club tie and didn't fancy wearing one of those :p

Thanks :)

Oi, those are things of beauty ;)

He looks gorgeous, and you sound like you'll be really well turned out. Charity shops are good for ties, and if you have a plain white shirt you can make it cream by washing it with yellow dusters :)

If you cant run to a waistcoat a slim fit dark V neck jumper/with or without sleeves would be ok.
Longsleeved shirt if wearing waistcoat/sleeveless
Any dark footwear is fine as long as you can run without slipping. Yard 'muckers come in at £15-£20
Trousers with straight legs - not boot cut or flared.
leather/ bamboo show cane is useful for guiding horsey round corners.. try ebay

He looks lovely ... enjoy yourselves

Haha! :D

Thanks, I hope so if it all goes to plan :D

ah, good tip thanks! :)

Another question - this wouldn't do would it? I have this already but all the show waistcoats have buttons that go higher up!

I actually need a pair of short yard boots - I have long muckboots but it's too hot for them atm!
Something like this in all black? http://www.derbyhouse.co.uk/Equestrian/Women/Footwear+and+Chaps/Wellies+and+Muckers/Horze+Thermal+Muckers_556-0054.htm

It depends on two things - How big your boobs are and if the judge is male!

Haha! :D Not very big at all I'm afraid :p That's why I think it would look better if I had one that buttoned up further!
We don't even have a primark here but I'm visiting my sister at the end of June so I will look then.

You could try looking on preloved or eBay for a waistcoat? Ditto for a pair of joddy boots.

Good luck, he looks a cracking chap! :)

I need to get a shirt, trousers, boots, gloves and tie first and see how much that costs if I have to use the one I posted above then it will have to do :p

If you have some dark trainers they will do fine. I have only showed a Welshie a couple of times in hand but when you trotted up you walked away, turned and trotted nicely back to the judge then past them at an extended trot to show the ponies paces. Jod boots on slippy grass bad news! That info may be WELL out of date!

Here's a couple of pics of me showing my welshie at the suffolk and south suffolk show this year... Shoe wise i wear trainers or walking boots as i find these easiest to run in, and they look smart. I've always worn a black or navy waist coat with navy tie and generally black or navy trousers as my pony has light legs. although this year i did wear blue linen trousers for the suffolk. Shirt wise I wear short sleeves if its hot and 3/4 length is a bit chilly... Sorry some pics are with a tweed jacket, it was cold at the suffolk this year... lol

Sorry for pic overload, hope this helps a little...

SA - please pull your Welshies mane!

I hate to disagree, but I think you will find she she shown correctly!

Taken from the native pony website...

THE WELSH SECTION C PONY
Rules for Showing
1: Welsh Mountain Ponies should be shown in as natural a state as possible.
2: Very thick, long manes may be discretely thinned, one long thin plait is usually put at the top of the mane behind the ear, the reason being to show off the line of the throat.
3: The long hairs under the jaw and those protruding from the ear may be trimmed off - leaving as natural a line as possible, the whiskers around the muzzle may be shortened.
4: The tail should look natural and should not be “banged” (leveled off square).

SA - I have to agree with EKW, they should be natural but not unkept. Mine was always pulled to neaten it, it wasn't short but nor was it bottom of the neck.

OP - I did have a white show halter for an A, I doubt I still have it but I will look.

I don't think I would wear that waistcoat but it may suit you. They seem to go fairly cheeply on ebay

Aso said already I'm sure a plain pair of trainers/ walking boots will look fine. That said Derby house seem to have fairly regular footwear sales. Good luck, remember to enjoy yourself!

SA - this style of mane pulling, not normal horse pulling! The tail has also been feathered.

She also doesn't have a plait because she was a complete madam about it and it wasn't worth the hassle . It never stopped her medaling Almost every year she was shown from a foal upwards.

Thanks for the advice, but am sure this was a thread about what the handler should wear.... How you're assuming what my mare's mane is like from not even a cm showing on a pic is beyond me, however it is not unkept, its very tidy, and cant be doing a bad job if I'm getting placed at county shows! :D

Maybe I was 2nd out of 2, the judge didnt have to give it to me! And as said above this is about handler attire not CC of my pony! If i wanted CC I would have asked for it!

B2B do you mind me asking what size you are / jacket / boots / gloves etc? I'm just wondering if I may have anything around that may be of some good - daughter's outgrown shirt / gloves etc? I think I have a show cane somewhere, plain black, if that's of any use to you? PM me if you prefer.

I think you'll either love or hate showing, it's not everyone's cup of tea, but most importantly your pony is gorgeous and have some fun :)

Thank you everyone for advice :D

Yes I am getting that black and white are a no, poor colours what did they ever do to anyone :p Navy blue I think I will go for!
