Ive received a letter from VOSA saying that I need a operators licence (restricted) for carrying my own horses to shows etc as I have income from these horses and the ones I breed at home.

At the weekend I looked around the local BSJA show and found just one lorry with an operators licence even though there were at least 12 on the showground where the owners carry not only there own SJ but those they have at competition livery!

I rang VOSA to object to their request but after a long and helpful conversation - I am in fact in breach of the rules so I will have applied.

So all of you out there driving competition horses around to shows and training etc get yourself legal as they are slowly catching up with all of us!

Not employed other than by myself! Under 7 and half so was well surprised to get the letter - but I have been through the legistration and there doesnt seem anyway around it.

Restricted licence is for someone who transports their own goods for hire and reward, if you sell on your youngstock then technically you require a restricted licence as you are gaining by transporting.
Restricted also applies to those who transport horses not owned by them but which they train / ride or produce for events.
To transport horses on a general basis for gain you require a Standard licence.
These rules apply to all vehicles over 7.5 tonne ( there are strong rumors that VOSA want to take it down to 3.5t in the future, to come in line with the new Driver CPC which covers all commercial drivers including white van man)
Hope this helps.
