i had one for a 'problem' horse i owned, thinking the horse may not be so scared. horse was still an idiot. farrier was okay though. i couldn't help thinking she was too small and timid, and not strong enough... but they were my judgements, she didn't actually do anything wrong.
i think it depends on the type of farrier you like. i do think i'd chose a male over a female (if only for flirting opportunities) in the future unless i had a horse that was scared of men. although, saying that, if they were scared of men, they need to get used to them. waffling now...
i employed a lady EP if you'd accept that - she was v good, horse had to have shoes back on though for studs for competing - farrier is male - i'd go for a female or male farrier - so long as they were good
My farrier is female, and she is fantastic. Always does an excellent job and is very easy to talk to. She also sometimes brings her adorable kids to the yard and they provide fantastic entertainment.
Can't help wondering why it should make any difference whether your farrier is male or female though? I know it's a physical job, but so is running a livery yard and no one is surprised that most YM's are female...
I wouldn't have anything against a female farrier- in fact would even go as far as to say one may be better...? However, lack of perving opportunities would put me right off....

I had a female farrier for a little while, she came recomended by a friend who said she was brilliant as she had really helped her horse with remedial shoeing..sorry i have to say she was useless.Maybe she wasent used to shoeing horses with feet bigger than a shetland but she was using pony size nails on my horse and the shoes was just slipping over the nail heads, imy lad lost 6 shoes in three weeks after she kept having to come back out to refit them..So i had to sack her (if thats the right term). If it had been a bloke he would of been shown the road too.
I'm sure you get good and bad as with men. The only one I've had was in Canada, she was certainly strong enough but had a terrible temper and belted a 4 year old in the belly with a rasp before throwing her entire toolbox at the wall by his head and storming off (horse was struggling to balance but NOT being naughty). I wouldn't employ her, but another one yes if good at her job. In fact, I'm considering it as a job myself, think im a bit old by now though!
my farrier's daughter is currently training-if she's half as good as her dad she'll be a good farrier. ridiculous to say that all female farriers are bad surely?!
I used to use a female farrier, she was fantastic. Infact, she was far better than a couple of male farriers I have used in the past.
I wouldn't hesitate to use one again
i use a male on at the mintute and wouldnt change him for the world, and he is doing really really well with jack getting him used to the farrier when i got him he was so so scared!, but if we ever moved i would deffinetley try ad female farrier i have nothing against themxx
I have one shes great, I had been trying to get hold of her for years but recently she had spaces. Shes great with my horses and above all does a bloomin good job
