Im planning to start showing Star this year for the first time, and I was just wondering what you think of his type and conformation. I dont have any pics of him standing properly on his own so these will have to do

Please ignore my awful riding and my miserable face

He's a registered fell by the way.

I would say that he looks like he needs a little more condition on him to do really well. Assuming he moves straight he looks lovely and is well schooled so should do really well. Good luck...i love fells!

Not a criticism, just an observation, I think there would be an expectation from a judge for your pony to appear more expressive in his movement and forward going. Also work on encouraging him to track up a little more.

He is a little cutie though, don't know enough about the breed in depth to comment on specific breed showing, but as an M&M I think you have a nice pony to make a start in local showing

Why not visit Hamlet's House which is a showing website dedicated to Mountain and Moorlands. I don't have the website address handy, but you should be able to google it.

Isn't he lovely.

You going to do Mountain and Moorland?

Thank you! Yes, M&M and maybe a few WH classes and fell pony classes.

I agree, we're working like mad on his condition at the minute, he's a lot better than he was when I got him. He does move straight, and the schooling has been a long, hard battle but we're getting there

Thank you, he does usually track up really well but he's very forward going and he gets rather exciteable so I'm a bit cautious about pushing him on too much. He would DEFINATELY track up at a show! I agree we need to work on trying to get him a bit more expressive.

I would defo say M&M classes - He is a loverrrrlly chap

. But do not pull his mane, tail or feathers - keep in in a natural state as poss for Native showing - he will just need a tidy up - trim whickers under chin, ear hair etc

Try a little spot of jumping too - I bet he would love it! Nice little sturdy legs!

PS - Smiley photos required please on such a beautiful ponio

Good luck

Oh believe me, he can jump! Ive gone up to 3ft3 with him but he could go quite a bit higher. Unfortunately I dont have any jumping pics on this computer, Ill add a couple when I get home:)

He looks gorgeous. I would be very wary of getting more condition on a pony for the sake of a show. To me he looks fit and in working condition. Thankfully the days of a pony needing to be fat in the show ring are coming to an end. Particularly with natives, I have found it a constant battle with their weight, IMO it's not worth the risk. I wouldn't trim his chin or ears either. You will get slaughtered by the judge for it (I used to show my Dales mare) Fells and Dales are expected to have hairy ears and whiskers. I bet he would do fab in WH as well as MM though.

That's interesting jojobah, because when I used to show my Sec A, some Judges would say they prefer the ear hair & chin tidy, which is what i used to do - is that just a Judge's preference then?

We always got placed as well though - mainly 1st

some 2nd and 3rd.

I never trim the whiskers only the long straggly bits under chin and ears - not a full blown 'cut'. Would love to know because, hopefully, my little girl will be poss showing again on the Sec A this year and I dont wanna be out of touch with things. Again, this was the case for my Dales x mare when I used to show her years ago.

And, yes thank goodness the showing of 'fat' ponies is tapering off!!

Was that a sec A Welsh or sec A Dales that you used to trim?. I think Welsh get away with quite a lot of trimming tbh., but with a Dales/Fell you would get really told off! Especially as the pony is in Cumbria and will be up against a lot of the same breed.

Also I would guess a little cosmetic trimming goes on with the welsh manes and tails as Holly's mane came below her shoulder, But I have never been up against anything else with a mane that long!

I asked a judge about manes when my section D was lined up at a show. I have never touched his but all the others had semi pulled manes. She said natural was correct.

how cute is he!!

IMO he could do with more condition so maybe start looking carefully at his diet and work load now as it will take time to get this on in time for showing.

He also needs more muscle on that bum IMO. hill work and lateral work - all that jazz would help.

he looks fab and like you say aslong as he is tracking up nicely at shows not shuffling along, and going straight and with a bit of 'flow' about him im sure you will do great.
don't know anything about fells but im sure as a WHP he'd be great as you say he jumps well so im sure you will have loads of fun. good luck x

The Welsh breeds are probably the most trimmed native breeds ever - discreetly of course, as they're supposed to be natural, but I've seen pulled manes, no whiskers and even perfectly trimmed ears. It's a shame in my opinion as they are supposed to be hairy!

Leave him all fuzzy and gorgeous

I bet that mane looks fantastic at speed, all streaming out behind
