So...

horsey is quite mareish She has contact/mouth issues mainly around time of seasons - which i am assuming is due to soreness in back so not really wanting to work properly over her back into contact. She wont eat mare supplements - I just about get her to eat her calmer. So was thinking about a marble.....

So opinions please ????.... Good bad - does work - doesnt work?

And idea of cost.

also she wont let you take temperature via rectum and tries to kill you (has thermo microchip that you scan and reads temp!!!) So how long does it take as i assume she will have to be taken to vets and put in stocks and lots of sedation so she doesnt kick ***** out of vet!

I have considered having it done for my pony. And still would.

However, I would try regumate first.

I the regumate improves things, then I would chose to have a marble put in - its pointless going through the experience of having one put in to find it makes her worse or doesnt change anything and then you need to get it out. The regumate should help decide further if it is the seasons causing these problems.

With my girl, now she has lost a lot of weigh (16st!!!) she is much better and I didnt notice she had come into season other than her back legs were dirty (yum!).

For me, I havent tried regumate- pony has auto immune disease so is prone to bad allergic responses, and so I would prefer to put the marble in and avoid the chemicals being put into her - but I have no idea how the difference in hormones will affect the allergies so thats why I havent as yet.

the marble goes in the uterus and fools body into thinking its pregnant so no more ovulation - no more seasons! - Like a coil in a lady.

I dont fancy the regumate - 1. she doesnt eat most supplements so cant guarantee will eat it and 2. its apparantly quite nasty in that I think you have to handle carefully as can cause infertility in humans. (think)

But is feeding it with sandwich or juice or something for two months equivalent to the risks of a marble? Internal damage, stress and infertility amongst other things - much riskier and more traumatic than a coil IMHO. And they are not permanent sometimes they come out etc.

I'm all for them as you can gather but it was a big decision for us to use a marble without regumate trial first. We didn't go ahead with either, but view the auto immune thread I did - total baldness an allergic reaction to something unknown - regulate is a big risk for us - for horses it's low risk and just use gloves when handling.

what does your vet suggest? they will give you costs and possible results marbles do work as long as you really dont want to breed in the future, but mares can eject them and pee them out. have you tried regumate or an implant first?

A friends very mareish mare had a marble, it was fantastic. I took her to the vets for it to be inserted, yes it was stocks and sedation. As the mare had foaled in the past and had a saggy cervix they said she may pass it again, and she did after a few months, but while it was there 100% improvement.
They won't do it if you want to breed inthe future as with IUDs in women there is a slight risk of infection.

I used a marble on my previous mare with great success & have now had one put in Fleur, she still has slight seasons, but there is a big improvement in rideability. It cost about £70 which included a scan of the ovaries before the vet put it in. They did it at my yard, no stocks, but did sedate her. There is a slight risk of infertility & infection, but if everything is sterile then the risk really is very slight. You need to have it done just as she is going out of season so the cervix is still slightly open, I opted to go straight for the marble as Regumate is so expensive, I will have the marble removed in October when her jab is due. Hope that helps.

sorry to be asking thick questions but why are you having the marble taken out ? is it for breeding ? . Thinking about it for a 14 year old mare that will never be bred from, does it just stay in then ?

You have it taken out otherwise it will become less effective in time. It will be removed in October & then reinserted in about April/May next year. Also I think that it can become stick to the uterus if you leave it too long, but that could be just me imagining things!

So do you have to have them scanned to see if it is still there and plan to have it replaced in early spring ?
So what is the easiest and simplest and most cost effective way of keeping the mare happy and chilled , want to be sure before I take her on:(

My friend's mare was sore, swollen and colicky during her cycle as well as being a bag - she suffered alot.

My friend had a marble put in at the vets in Jan.

She has been a sweet, lovely lady since.

And she has found peace! No more symptoms. No more pain.

It was worth every penny.

How long it stays in depends on how tight the uterus is and the fate of the gods!

It's stayed in so far - we look for it whenever we muck out though......

I would do it as the first treatment - one afternoon and it's done rather than months of drugs...

I tried regumate and after vets reccomendation opted for marble. My vet suggests leaving it in apparently opinions have changed on removal. It was best thing all round for my mare and my safety:D cant recommend it highly enough .
