just wondering what peoples opinions are of liveries blasting out music from either radio/ipod on the yard?

we have a few liveries on the yard who do it and even go off riding leaving it switched on or they play it loud and then try to make conversation with you or keep it going when you are trying to discuss your horse with professionals.

i don't mind music within reason but when it's already busy on the yard (it's a socialable yard) and everyone is chatting i find the music to be a bit rude, so do a few others. also when i go to the yard i like to just sit in the stable with my horses and relax without any electrical noises (tv's, radios, etc), i can listen to music in the car! when i get home i have to put up with the tv or music from OH and kids so my time at the yard is (in my head) quiet time or conversation time depending on who is there.

when i say loud i mean it's so loud that you have to shout just talking to someone right next to you.

When I worked at a riding school, the rule was if the radio went on before 8 am it could stay on. I always had one on in the Pony Yard and the ponies seemed to like it. Coco particularly liked Meatloaf and he normally had his head next to the radio - sometimes he used to bop his head around to the music!!

We use to years ago have music on but it was transister but not sure if ghetto blaster etc.It probably wouldnt bother me so I would ignore it and if anyone of the music fans tried to talk to me I would pretend not to be able to hear them!

Our yard sometimes has it on in the morning whilst everyone is mucking out and I like it - I also think it desensitises the horses to things they might hear out at show's etc. however it's never too loud so you can't hear people talking to you and is always turned off when the mucking out is done so its a different situation really. I think what you have described is taking it too far to be honest :)

I like music on when mucking out but would never have music on when I wasn't there. Ditto wouldn't have music on if someone was in a situation where it was inappropriate - eg. speaking to someone such as a professional.
I think like all things - its fine, until people take the p***.

I don't like music on the yard, I go up there for peace. I like to hear the birds and the munching and my panting as I push the damn wheel barrow up the hill......

I like a quiet yard, load music blasting so you cannot have a conversation is not on, not turning it off when a vet or other professional is on the yard is plain rude and should not be tolerated. I would have a word with the YO and see if it can at least be kept to a sensible level and turned off whenever there are visitors that need to be able to focus on what they are doing.

I alwAys have music really load when I'm there but as soon as someone else turns up I either turn it down or off! If I'm on my own there ( it's a quiet yard with only 5 or 6 liveries ) I do leave it on when I ride in the school or poo
Pick as I can still hear it - but once again if some turns up and it's still loud as i havent realised I always apologise!

I dont mind a radio as background noise but not blaring, and i also think its rude for someone to inflict their taste in music blaring from an ipod, what if we all decided to do that, use your earphones please.
Sometimes it just nice to use the quiet time while mucking out to gather your thoughts and process them.

I used to be on a yard where it became a battle of the radio stations, Classic FM vs some Chav FM dance station. Blazing rows were had batteries were taken from the radio and hidden. Stations were repeatedly switched back & forth. It all got a bit childish, pony club vs the more mature set until one day it was "accidentally" ahem knocked into a water bucket. I didn't mind it as background noise and my mare seemed to like the classical station. But if it was so loud I had to shout, another radio would be meeting its watery grave ;-)

Usually we have Radio 1 in the yard, something upbeat - but then when we're playing we put on Classic FM to chill the ponies out in the morning. I swear it works! They all lie down after breakfast and have a snooze!

I like having music in the yard, not sure the ponies appreciate my singing along though..!

I have a wee radio on, not loud though and i am in the corner out of the way. If anyone comes over to talk, i always switch it off. don't think anyone would like it blaring at our place.

Don't mind it low but hate it really loud .We don't have a real problem more folk(mainly 1/2 folk)drive on with volume up full.Personally would love to shoot their b****y radio out!!
If you like it really loud use earphones simple! Then you only deafen yourself

I love music up on the yard! (Or anywhere infact!) When we had our own place we had a wind up radio that was constantly on, but then we moved onto livery & they are not into having it on in the yard so I just play it from my phone in the stable & the daughter wears her earphones while riding in the school xx

I normally put my ipod on full blast when no one's there, if people come up then it go's off unless its someone who wants to listen to music too.

I have just got a speaker for my phone for Christmas to whack on in the field while playing with the horses, I am more chilled with it on and does the horses no harm to hear different things (even if choosing a spot where it can't be eaten is rather difficult!) They don't even object to my flailing attempts at dancing ;) It's private land though and if our friend was down with her horses and would rather it off I would absolutely do so.

If on a yard I don't mind a background radio but would object to blaring music and if a vet/farrier was down would expect it off if requested. I always stuck one headphone in while doing things down the yard. Could hear if I needed to, enjoyed my music and didn't upset anyone... I did stick it on loudspeaker if walking the horses back in the dark though.

Simple solution... If your on a livery yard (ie a business) it's illegal for you to play music unless you have a PRS lisence

the radio has been fab when the hunt are passing through as we shut the barn doors and turn the radion on so the horses don't have the full on effect of the hunt.

most of the horses enjoy the radio and aren't phased by any of the different 'noises' coming out of it!
we also have the problem of a song starting then another livery doesn't like it so changes station or jumps to the next song, we can hear the start of several songs in less than a minute!
as someone said above they could put earphones in for the ipod but they dont'. the YO is just as bad for the music though so pointless talking to her! in the mornings the yard is pretty much empty so not a problem but it gets busy from 3pm and that's the worst time for the battle of the stations/music.

Well remembered! Yes, any place of work with more than 2 people has to have a lisence to play a bloomin radio! Totally daft but it is required!

it's a big busy yard so obviously alot of mixed tastes in music, some of the music they listen to gets a few of us on edge and then we find the horses react to us being on edge.

the radio will be taking yet another flying lesson though at this rate! (not by me i might add) lol

There's also another liscece as well you need to have - can't remember what the name is.

I think you need it to play any music in public (ie you need it for a pub as well).

You could always get someone to ring up the yard and pretend to be from PRS

For the first time ever, I'm on a yard by myself, just mee :D Some days I have music on, some days I like it peaceful!

When on a livery yard though I didn't mind background music, but not too loud. And when I worked on a yard it was nice to have music - was the only thing that would liven me up in the monrings!

I don't mind it when it's quiet and were mucking out, but our groom likes to put on his music which is ALWAYS classical fm, it's not overally loud but I mean come on! I was trying to talk to my vet the other day and bl@@dy Mozart was going on in the background! Don't know how the vet heard my lads chest and heart!!

You shouldn't need the entertainment type licence - that's more for pubs but you DO need the PRS one

I've just sorted one for my place of work it was about £180 but price depends on lots of variables

Always have classic fm on throughout the yard. Great for the youngsters to listen to noise and a great tool for our horses who get agitated when in as they feel like there are things going on and they are not alone.

A radio if used correctly is a great tool, particularly if you are managing young competition horses who need to be relaxed under a tanoy or commentator.
