opinions on music around the yard?

I havent read all the posts but no one seems to be thinking of the horses in this situation! They have much more sensitive hearing and probably don't like it blasting out this loud, i have the radio on while i muck out and enjoy listening to music but mine are at home so i am only annoying myself and often i just listen to my ipod, as i never have the radio loud and often cant even hear it! If they are being left in I will leave the radio on but i change in to radio 4 so there is just speaking as they apparently like this and they do all seem very settled and on the plus side I also have very well educated horse :D

If I want to listen to music while I'm working, I'll put my MP3 player on with earphones. If the mare is in by herself as we are getting ready to go out, then a radio with radio 4 playing goes on (she seems to like listening to the voices). We keep the horses at home, but would not be happy having other peoples choices foisted on me! It's bad enough at work when the admin staff have some sort of nasty commercial station on!

Hear, hear! My fingers have been itching to post that sentence. :)

I instinctively feel loud radio with music interspersed with noisy chat must be so stressful for horses. I expect they do get used to it but I wonder if they dread it starting? On a busy yard add in clattering, banging of stable duties along with shouting to make yourself heard. :( The horses can't get away if they wanted to.
Us humans live in a world of noise these days, radio or tv on the minute we get out of bed, music/radio in the car etc. all day, everyday. That's our choice and we can switch it off if we choose to.

Perhaps I'm just an old fuddy duddy but I like peace and quiet myself, I can't think straight in noisy environments. I have a strong feeling an animal dependent on it's hearing as well as sight for it's safety must find all that white noise a stressor.

I'd usually turn it up when I was in there, as it was our own property and I could think of nothing worse than skipping out 6 boxes in silence...
Again I ask... Why? What is so terrible about doing something in silence? (Except it's never really silence...)

I have to be honest and say that I find radio intensely irritating with all that inane drivel spouted by DJs. However, I do like to play music from my iPod through speakers when I am working on my own. I have a stud and can honestly say that the stallions seem to appreciate my very eclectic taste in music :D because they are very chilled-out and listen happily to everything from rock to classical. They seem to really appreciate Emeli Sandé at the moment ;) but aren't averse to a bit of Coldplay or Les Misérables:cool: I also feel it gets them used to the big events where music is played eg evening performances at shows or BS jumping events. My horses are Arabs and hot-blooded so I think I would know if they were upset by it in any way.

Absolutely agree with this. The nearest comparison I can think of is being in hospital where you have no control over your environment and the continual noise can be exhausting and depressing.

Mine are in a very large field and welcome to go away if they want. They regularly take off for a hoon round if the other herd comes over or just wander off to graze. None have taken off when music goes on yet.

Completely agree with you, some of the radio stations with ads especially are very raucous. I know I'm being a grumpy old woman but absolutely hate music at the yard, especially having somebody else's musical tastes inflicted on me.

I don't mind music at the yard, so long as it's not too loud. The girls on my old yard often used to have the radio on while they were doing their jobs, but they'd keep it to a sensible volume and always turn it off when they went riding. At my new yard, there is only me and the YO and there is a radio in the tack room which is often on when we are at the yard, but it isn't loud and you don't really notice it unless you're in the tack room. I have been on a yard where music was banned, and I did think that was fair enough, as it was the YO's home and I could see she wouldn't want music in what was essentially her back yard.
I also know a couple of yards where music is played all the time, because the horses are in almost all the time and the owners think it reduces boredom (I'm not convinced, but there you go :o). One place just had a radio with radio 1 on, but the other place, where I used to ride in Portugal, had fancy in built speakers and piped proper classical music through into the horses' stables! That was only for the very posh, expensive horses mind!

We have the radio on when we're at the yard. But it's always on quite quietly and say if one of our horses is on box rest we will leave the radio on just to reduce them being bord( not sure if it works but oh well!!)

I can't stand listening to music when I'm doing my horsey things (I'm a musician, by the way). We did have a couple of teenagers who were putting the radio on whilst they mucked out. If they went out riding and left it on I'd go and turn it off.

No I hate it - would not stay at a yard either if it were allowed. Why should i be inflicted to someone elses choice in music - I am paying to be in a livery yard not a night club and I feel very strongly about it.

If you want to listen to music - fine - but use ear plugs and leave everyone else in peace - poor horses - they can hardly put their hooves in their ears and have no chance of turning it off.
