Hi guys - was just wondering if you could comment on how easily you reckon I will be able to re-home the following horse:
16.1hh 8yo TB gelding, black with a star - very attractive.
Evented up to novice - was ready to go intermediate this season but was diagnosed with kissing spines in april as was rolling poles SJ despite lots of schooling/gridwork. Fairly extensive kissing spines so surgery not really an option. Has had time off, tildren, steroid injections, shockwave, physio and lots of lunge work with pessoa, and is now in light work again.
Question is at present Im unsure of how much he will stand up to - he loves his work so want to find a home where they will be sympathetic to his condition but also still do some stuff with him for as long as he is able to e.g. dressage, ROR classes.
He's safe to hack ,and even with a back problem never bucked/reared/humped or anything.
He's v chilled in a yard environment, doesn't cope too well in a back-garden setup. He boxwalks when waiting for food, has a chronic tearing problem on one eye which requires wiping each day, and has had 3 sarcoids treated on his belly (which may be goen forever or may recurr)...would live out with feed and lots of rugs!
Loads, clipping catching etc all 100%. He's just a bit of a typical TB so needs an experienced handler - not nsaty AT ALL though (just cheeky!)
I would keep him if i could afford but i want to event and he will never do this again...

I wouldn't want money for him obviously, just the right home!
Thanks for any advice!!!

If I had space for him, I would take him like a shot, I hack and do light schooling only and always clean my horse's eyes as he has weepy eyes too. I also have experience with TBs.

Could you loan him out to a hacking home with a view to them buying?

I think you'll rehome him quite easily, but to be honest you might be better asking something for him to make sure he goes to the right home. You can always negotiate that later. A lot of people looking for free horses are completely unsuitable owners - they say they cannot afford the initial outlay but if a horse has problems then would they will be able to afford a sudden vet bill?

I recently took on a TB with a nasty scar, cateract and major attitude problem. He was pretty much unrideable but is settling nicely and working beautifully. I paid a few hundred for him (although that was with some tack and rugs) but the girl did say she'd attracted some real joyriders through offering him so cheap.

LWVTB is an option as Highlandponylass mentioned, but make sure it's contracted!

Good luck - there will be someone out there, it might just take a while to find them. (Perhaps try an ad on Project Horses?)

I'm sure you will easy find someone who wants a happy hacker that will take him on long term loan etc there are loads of people out there who he's suit, in fact I bet you'll find someon off the forum, he sounds lovely, just needs a home/rider that is more suited to the sort of work he can do now thats all, lots of people enjoy long hacks, even just walking and the odd trot/canter.
